Cathy Horyn’s 5 Fiercest Fashion Feuds

slidercathy

I’m paying homage to the baddest bitch in fashion you don’t know enough about: Cathy Horyn. The New York Time’s brash and brilliant head of fashion journalism struck awe- and not a small amount of rage- of diva designers for 15 years. Cathy stepped down from her post as NYT fashion critic in January, to focus on taking care of her dying partner and writing that long anticipated novel.

2

Utterly fearless and brutally insightful, Cathy Horyn’s biting critique and accurate analysis of every major player in the fashion industry earned her a large and loyal readership. Not to mention the grudging respect- and sometimes even surprising friendship- of the powerful designers she judged fearlessly.

Unlike the legions of bloggers and commenters who dare not insult the powers that be (because they have nothing to lose) or occasional gentle rebuke in major publications (who dare not alienate potential advertisers/coveted invitations/rungs on the social-climbing ladder), criticism from Cathy Horyn strikes a nerve.

Or vein.

Or occasionally a spurting jugular.

If you don’t have time to peruse the 1,123 articles Cathy Horyn penned during her time at The New York Times (and really who does), here’s a breakdown of the biggest scandals and fiercest feuds of Cathy Horyn’s marvelous career.

1. Oscar de la Renta

1

When Cathy Horyn won the CFDA award for fashion journalism back in 2002, Women’s Wear Daily celebrated the event with an article, “Does The New York Times Hate Fashion?” complete with a quote from Oscar de la Renta who argued that: “Cathy Horyn is not one who loves fashion or enhances fashion in any manner. There are personal commentaries and digs, not only about the designers, but about people who attend the shows, which I consider unnecessary and unprofessional in reviewing a collection… I’ll say it. I’m not a coward.”

The battle reached a boil in September of 2012, when Cathy wrote a scathing review of Oscar’s latest collection, dubbing him the “hot dog” of American fashion. Oscar’s rebuttal was swift and public. A few days later, Horyn opened her WWD to see a full-page ad from De la Renta calling her a “stale 3-day old hamburger.”

In a Harper’s Bazaar Essay published just this month, Cathy Horyn made a surprising revelation: “A lot of people find it surprising that I’m friendly with Oscar de la Renta even though he once took out an ad in Women’s Wear Daily calling me a “hamburger.” (I had sportingly used “hot dog” in my review of his Spring 2013 collection.) This was silly business—it is a silly business—but if there’s one thing I know from covering Oscar for three decades, it’s that he’s intensely competitive. A good fight, even a phony good fight, magnifies power. It also creates a ton of publicity, as Oscar reminded me with a grin when I saw him a few weeks later.”

2. Hedi Slimane

ugg

In October of 2012,  Hedi Slimane debuted his highly hyped, ultra anticipated debut for Saint Laurent. Yet NYT’s infamous fashion critic Cathy Horyn was pointedly not invited. Apparently Saint Laurent’s it-kid new Creative Director was still sulking about a piece Horyn wrote 8 YEARS before, in 2004, about Raf Simons. In the piece, Cathy had the gall to dismiss one of Slimane’s pieces (specifically a cut of slim pants) as imitations of Raf Simons pants. 8 years is quite a long time to hold a grudge, but apparently Hedi was determined to serve revenge cold by withholding a coveted invite to his triumphant new St. Laurent show.

Unperturbed, Horyn reviewed the St. Laurent Collection from home, and shockingly decided that she didn’t much care for Hedi Slimane’s new St. Laurent looks anyhow. Horyn’s deliciously dismissive review derided the collection as “a nice but frozen vision of a bohemian chick at the Chateau Marmont. Or in St. Tropez.” In a fit of petulant pique, Slimane lashed out on (what else) Twitter, tweeting that Horyn was a “a schoolyard bully and also a little bit of a stand-up comedian,” and “publicist in disguise.” Horyn’s flippant response? “It’s silly nonsense to me.”

3.  Lady Gaga

lady_gaga_cathy_horyn

In September of 2011, Lady Gaga penned a piece for V Magazine slamming Horyn’s style of criticism and posing the rather pretentious question, “When did the pretense of fashion become more important than its influence on a generation?” Clearly, Gaga takes her meat dresses and see through jump suits very seriously, and considers her increasingly outlandish apparel as art rather than shameless attention seeking.

Not satisfied with writing a magazine article dismissing Horyn’s work, Gaga decided to milk the feud for all it’s worth via a song. Lady Gaga released a single called “Cake Like Lady Gaga,” including lyrics like “Cathy Horyn, your style ain’t dick” and, classier still, a schoolyard taunt aimed at Horyn’s sickly partner, Art Ortenberg, braying “Ortenberg, you can suck my dick.”

4. Tommy Hilfiger

timmy

In 2010, Cathy Horyn penned a blistering, snarky, not even pretending to be remotely nice review of Tommy Hilfiger ‘s aesthetic, brand, and most recent collection. She began with an elaborate comparison of Hilfiger’s Spring 2010 to a pruned hedge. “My thoughts kept returning to those obsessively clipped privet hedges on Nantucket and in the Hamptons. They look so artificial — and one must assume they look that way because their owners are made anxiously uncomfortable by the sight of an ungroomed one.”

Psychological takedowns of banal prep do not happen nearly enough. The gems kept dropping from Cathy Horyn’s mouth as she sneered “For Mr. Hilfiger, the runway may be paved in imitation fieldstone, as it was on Sunday night in the Lincoln Center show space, but it’s still a big Sisyphean ball of khaki. Materially, the output will never exceed the creative input, and so he, Mr. Hilfiger of New York, Nantucket and Mustique, is doomed to repeat himself. Or, more accurately, the Hilfiger design team is.”

5. Alexander Wang

wangkathy

In September of 2010, Horyn did the unthinkable to anyone in fashion not named Cathy Horyn: she dissmissed the young fashion darling du jour. Horyn has some choice words for fashion-world darling Alexander Wang, saying that Alexander Wang is “not a great designer, though he probably would be happy to accept any laurels that people want to toss him, but he is clearly a shrewd guy.” And the analysis went downhill from there. Some choice barbs:

“Even the most talented, surprising postmodernist designer can seem to have his feet planted in concrete compared to the weightlessness of Alexander Wang”

“Mr. Wang doesn’t really have courage in the traditional sense of trying something new and difficult, but he does have China. Nearly all of his clothing is now produced there”

“But don’t fret for the 26-year-old Mr. Wang: the combined whiplash of globalization and the Internet all but guarantees that these clothes will look new to someone”

And, my favorite opening ever of a runway review:

“Fashion doesn’t have much of a past now that everything is instant, and don’t expect clothes to look coherent or a designer to have a consistent style. Of course, this new condition in fashion may strike you as messy, shallow, dependent on borrowed ideas and visually boring, but don’t worry: like nausea, this feeling will pass.”

June Haute Horoscopes: Let The Stars Set Your Style

GEMINI
(May 21 – June 21)

Gemini

Key Designers: Altuzarra, Saint Laurent, Chloé

As glitzy Geminis strut their way through their Birthday month and into the style spotlight, we advise you to put your best foot forward; literally.
Perhaps, the best news of the year is the dramatic shift from work to play. The North Node of Fate is finally leaving your work zone and backing up into your house of love. This puts the emphasis on the people, places and things you adore most. But careful Ms. Gemini, a retrograde in Neptune will slow down communication. Avoid online shopping like the plague. Instead of risking an overdue shipment, sashay down to YSL and pick up your purchase! By the 25th and 26th, you’re on top of the world! (If you love a high stiletto, that might be quite literally true.)

Do: Keep you footwear fresh with the cutting-edge heels at Altuzarra. He certainly brings a unique blend of inventiveness and sophistication to his shoes.

Don’t: Your plans could be frustrated in some way through miscommunication, undelivered messages, delays due to traffic, or other obstacles. Don’t let this dim your enthusiasm.

CANCER
(June 22 – July 22)

Cancer

Key Designers:  Céline, The Row, Christian Dior

In sync with the Moon, your fashions are continually waning and waxing. You are the unpredictable ‘mood dresser’ Ms. Cancer. Good thing you are feeling great, you are looking great and you are doing great work. Your projects are great, and your wardrobe is simply stunning! Cancer. Yes, you’ve officially come out of your shell and now you’re in high demand, baby! The summer of 2014 summons a tidal wave of shapely self-expression with unprecedented strength and sprawling impact. Your followers have no idea this is coming. Oh, well. It’s nice to shake things up every now and then, yes? Sure it is!

Do: Take a dive into the deep end at Céline, there, the waters are calm, just how you prefer them. A sea of stimuli awaits you.

Don’t: You wear your emotions, but this month it’s important to remember that stress is never in style. Breathe in, breathe out.

LEO
 (July 23 -August 22)

Leo

Key Designers: Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Thakoon

Did someone say the say F word? Your latest fashion report card is in Ms. Leo, and ’flawless’ is written all over it. On a scale of mustard to mayo, you have everyone playing ketchup! This summer, the planet of fame and fortune (Jupiter) moves into your stars, catapulting you to the stylish starlet you so desire to be! Wow, are you ready for this! But beyond style, you are getting to know yourself on such a profoundly intimate level. Self-knowledge is über glamorous! You’re a living testament to know-thyself wisdom. This is the year to apply all that you’ve learned in the fierce realms of high fashion and beauty. You were born for greatness and the fiery side of your personality is dying to blaze its own trail this year. Don’t wait around for permission from another. You’re the leader of the pack; it’s just a matter of stepping out into those gorgeous shoes. Courage is your best outfit!

Do: Thakoon is making wave this season, the raw romance balances quite well with your new age beauty. Its simple, easy, crafty, and lovely.

Don’t: Although you may be feeling unappreciated or particularly emotional, this is no time to create unnecessary drama. Laugh more!

SCORPIO
(October 23- November 21)

Scorpio

Key Designer: Balmain, Versace, Tom Ford

Should you wear hot pink or ginger or an all-red outfit to go out in? Somehow your inner fashion critic directs you to just the right styles and colors to catch everyone’s eyes. Trust your gut. You’re amazing! The summer of 2014, Saturn will ask you to go way beyond your normal concept of beauty and push the limits on what you think is gorgeous. You’ve let go of so much during the last year and now you’re preparing for a major rebirth. After shedding layers upon layers of passé attachments, you’re ready for the freshest and coolest fashions. Passionate, penetrating, and determined, this sign will probe until they reach the inward truth and outward beauty they desire. The Moon enters Scorpio in late June, meaning that difficulties with your style and image will be ironed out through the use of your own personal flare and wisdom.

Do: No messing around with dresses here. Sitting down? Bathrooms? Who cares! Tom Ford’s woman sees fashion as performance.

Don’t: Be cautious. You can easily fall for a fashion faux pas scam. Anything that seems to be too fabulous to be true most likely is. You don’t pop molly, you rock Tom Ford.

SAGITTARIUS
(November 22 -December 21)

Sagittarius

Key Designers: Jeremy Scott, Moschino, Kenzo

, Bull’s-eye!

Bull’s-eye! When it comes to trends, you never miss the mark! You are Fashions provocateur—and maybe a more thoughtful one than you sometimes gets credit for. What you do so well is mix references so that you become something completely singular. As the summer approaches and Jupiter sails in with offers for a big opportunity to change, take the challenge! “Ambition” is the key word for this sassy sign. The summer of 2014 will be a moment of genuine chic for you Ms. Sagittarius, and a reminder that, “you are who you are” and, obviously, you are amazing!

Do: Gobble up the goodies at Moschino this season! It’s an all you can eat buffet for the pop culture hipster hungry for the season latest and tasty trends!

Don’t: Your exuberant energy is much in demand. It can be easy to overcommit yourself or lose track of important priorities. Be a watchful manager of your precious time and fashion resources.

AQUARIUS
(January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius

Key Designers: Balenciaga, Gareth Pugh, Fendi

Like a great electric bolt, you are sending shock waves through the galactic fashion galaxy this season. Your coming of age, into a sexy supernova, is finally happening! June is a great time to start a bunch of small but significant changes or additions to your beauty routine or wardrobe. Thinking outside the basic box will come easy to you this year – not that it’s ever too hard. Don’t be too surprised if you find you’re unlocking some magical closet doors just by being your funky self. Learn how to trust your fashion senses. The planets have arranged it all for you!

Do: Look to infinity, and beyond for infinite inspiration this season. At Fendi, the clothes have a playful and space age touch.

Don’t: Be pigeonholed into believing you’re a dwarf star. You mustn’t forget that you aren’t apart of the majority of ordinary main sequence stars floating around out there. You are brilliant, bold, and electrifying!

LIBRA
 (September 23 – October 22)

Libra

Key Designers: Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Lanvin

Famed for your domination in nonfiction fashion, your clothes are always practical and true to the present day, Ms. Libra. Your style echoes a time when woman oozed charisma and personality, even while wearing an apron in the kitchen. With the winds of Jupiter at your back all summer long, you are instantly fashions best-selling author of personal style. Sale it girl! Your love of fashion and housewares will see you out and about in stores quite often beginning in June. One of the Libra’s favorite pastimes is to shop for someone and something special. If you go shopping Libra, it’s best to plan some extra time! You are terribly indecisive when it comes to purchasing. While writing on the pages of your personal style diary stay in a mind-set of ageless elegance. Somehow you will feel lifted, and lighter. Opt for clothes that define the good life, but that refrain from feeling out-of-touch with reality. Your wardrobe, should evoke the joy and optimism of the present moment. And there’s nothing that’s more timeless than that.

Do: Copy and paste style notes at Carolina Herrera this season. Study her masterful fashion shorthand. Jot down some fashion anecdotes, and use them to leave a style statement this summer!

Don’t: Flip back and annotate your wardrobe, don’t let fashion bookworms misinterpret your style. Any style satires fashion critics write about you this summer, will ruin an otherwise A+ appearance.

VIRGO
(August 23-September 23)

Virgo

Key Designers: Michael Kors, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein

Virgo embodies all that is wonderful, confident, and happy about fashion. In 2014 Virgos everywhere proudly wear their bold and beautiful reds, white, and brave blues! Your freedom loving and adventurous nature is very much in harmony with the times. As the month gets started, you are shopping for new clothes and color-coding your chic closet. The total mental makeover that began in last season is really taking root. It’s worth the extra effort and small sacrifices in order to achieve your goals. You’ll love the new you and stylish looks you’re bringing in this season. All in all Ms. Virgo, you like your fashion statement to be simple: Throw it on, enjoy it, and get on with living your life.

Do: Drop the top on your Ford Thunderbird this summer and glide down Route 66 into the jet set world of Michael Kors. Show the tabloids just how dazzling, classic, and Gone with the Wind gorgeous you really are.

Don’t: Take it easy, and don’t let anyone force you into buying something you aren’t totally stoked to have.

PISCES
(February 19 – March 20)

Pisces

Key Designers: Prada, Neil Barrett, Alexander McQueen

You are fashion’s most evolved connoisseur of junk culture, Ms. Pisces. The culture of the Internet, when anything and everything is just a Google search away. If you’ve been feeling a bit disconnected, lag no more! Luckily Jupiter will be moving into your work zone to bring you more zippy opportunities than you can possibly compute. You’ll be moving like the high-speed internet, zoom zoom! June continues to bring romance and pleasure in a big and fabulous fashion. But careful, retrograding Venus may cause some technical difficulties later this summer, causing a system overload! After all, Instagram crashes, iPhones die, and WIFI connections fall apart. The best you can do is breathe and reboot.

Do: As for the Mood of Pisces? There is more of a mannish #swagger this summer at Alexander McQueen. And that’ll be a good thing: its time you embrace something quite different.

Don’t: Choose every word, photo and message with utmost care. The social media world is paying close attention to your every move. Ban those drunken party photos from your news feed!

ARIES
(March 21- April 19)

Aries

Key Designers: Marchesa, Valentino, Chanel

You can look, but you can’t touch an Aries. Your fashions are never boring. Startling, for sure — shocking, maybe. You have the “gimme fifty feet” persona.
Of course, you being you, you’ll enjoy the attention — and encourage it. Hey, it’s your job to be gorgeous and talented. Might as well have fun with it. But, sometimes too much of a good thing is, well, not so good. It’s like watching a Bollywood movie: we are dazzled by a lot of your flash and color, but aren’t really sure what the hell is going on with your outfits. Here’s some advice: simplicity doesn’t limit, it liberates! Simplify Ms. Aries! Sometimes, like straps on an evening gown life’s problems criss-cross, and it’s impossible to pin-point an exact area that needs attention. If you feel stuck for answer in such a question – trust the fashion cosmos to bring you the solutions you can trust!

Do: Appoint Valentino as leading label in your wardrobe this season, it’s rich, it’s romantic. It’s royalty realness!

Don’t: With such a high rank Ms. Aries don’t allow fashion rejects to exercise a veto against you. Reign supreme! Let them eat cake.

CAPRICORN
(December 22 – January 19)

Capricorn

Key Designers: Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Vera Wang

If your noise is the air and you catch a foul odor, look down! It’s you, Capricorn, you are the shit! As wise as you are, you know this! Capricorns are lucky. They are the ones who look younger as they get older. They are very attractive! Get ready for one stellar career and style year, sexy bitch! 2014 could easily be one of your most successful years on record, thanks to a huge push from the fashion gods to the next level with your goals. For one thing you’ll have the planet of drive for an extended stay, through July. This is a year to shed any passé baggage. You don’t need it anymore, Capricorn. Years later, you see your style as an evolution, a unique reflection of who you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re going Ms. Capricorn. Then, as always, the journey continues.

Do: Stylistically, you see yourself in every woman. Raise a glass with Diane von Furstenberg this summer. It’s a celebration of womanhood and empowerment! And no wonder: For the DVF woman, after all the cheers and high-spirited fashions, the world can look a lot more fabulous.

Don’t: Now you are ready put your foot down, refusing to participate in any more drama. This doesn’t make you a bad person, so don’t let the typical Capricorn guilt set in once you free yourself from the chains.

TAURUS
(April 20 – May 20)

Taurus

Key Designer: Burberry, Hermès, Bottega Veneta

Mirror, mirror on the wall who’s the best dressed of them all? You are Ms. Taurus! This summer, you will need to put in enough efforts to polish your wardrobe and style and make it stronger. More so, because success is hammering its way into 2014 for you. Be confident! Personify the idea of incredibly fine quality and craftsmanship. It doesn’t get more discreetly chic than that. Overall, opt for a superworked wardrobe that exhibits the strength of the you personality Ms. Taurus and the notion that the delight is in the details. Open your eyes to what’s around you. Sometimes you don’t need to go on vacation to be inspired. If there’s a message, it’s this: Let’s all relax. For a transitional season, at a transitional time, this is a nice way to go.

Do: Open Burberry’s tool shed this season, fill your fashion-fix-it toolbox! You’ll build a über utilitarian style wardrobe from the garments and accessories you gather.

Don’t: Careful not to lose your bolts and screws this summer Ms. Taurus. Without the necessary hardware, the main components of your beautiful wardrobe will fall to pieces.

IT FACTOR FRIDAY: OLD MODELS

old-models

Lately it seems like everywhere we turn, we see models who are 60+.

It’s not that surprising, considering we’re living in an age where people are dedicated to broadening the definition of beauty to include more than just the blond-haired, blue-eyed, white-skinned, size-2 models that have run the show since the 60s.   From Rick Owens’ critically acclaimed step dance/runway show for SS14, to Aerie’s latest “Real” campaign, fashion is starting to accept new definitions of beauty.  It makes sense that that definition would include, ahem, “advanced” fashionistas as well.

old-models

old-models

Karen Walker’s past sunglasses campaigns have featured the women of “Advanced Style,” but she upped the ante this season and included the Kenyan artisans who actually make her wares in the campaign photos.  We’ve got to say, these ladies look fab in Karen’s pieces, and we think this campaign will boost sales in all categories.  Young hipsters will identify with the off-beat models, and mature fashion-minded ladies will be able to identify with the quirky designs, instead of saying “I’m too old for that!” (which we hear all the time with our clients).

old-models

old-models

The Row, designed by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, has always skewed older.  Their luxurious pieces at crazy-high price points have been marketed towards older, successful women looking for high-end quality pieces that aren’t showy.  For Pre Fall 2014, the Olsens took things a step further and cast models between 40 and 60+ for the lookbook.  Linda Rodin’s shots blew us away; we hope we’re that chic at 60!

old-mdoels

American Apparel, always making headlines, just topped their latest “merkin” controversy with news of their new lingerie model: 62-year-old Jacky O’Shaugnassey.  The older model has posed for the brand in the past, but never in such skimpy styles.  AA and Jacky bare it all in their latest campaign, which features Jacky in a see-through lace bra-and-panties combo!  A bold move, but worth it: we see this campaign appealing to American Apparel’s current market and older clients that want to feel young again.  Kudos, AA!

Are you glad to see more diversity in ad campaigns?  What demographic do you wish would get more face time?

CAMPAIGN TRAIL: 3 SPRING ADS THAT GOT IT RIGHT

lupita-nyongo-miu-miu

Celebrities modeling for high-fashion brands is nothing new, but something about the latest crop of Spring ad campaigns and their celebrity counterparts feels fresh and exciting.  This season, designers didn’t just tap the biggest faces in the biz for money-making modeling ventures; instead, it seems they focused on really finding the perfect face to fit the brand image.  The result is a season of perfectly inspiring images that we can’t tear our eyes away from.  The 3 best matchups out there?  Lupita Nyong’o for Miu Miu, Rihanna for Balmain, and Lou Doillon for Chloe.

miu-miu-spring-2014

Miu Miu’s quirky Spring collection didn’t obviously lend itself to Lupita’s (insanely cool) style.  The 12 Years A Slave star is a relative newcomer who is still cementing her street cred, and is known for darker material.  Props to the decision-makers at Miu Miu for recognizing Lupita’s style potential early on and tapping her for their campaign!  The bright colors and cartoonish prints of Miu Miu’s 70s-glam collection get a luxe upgrade from Lupita’s glowing skin and attitude-filled eyes.  Although the brand also features Elizabeth Olsen, Bella Heathcote, & Elle Fanning in their Spring adverts, we love Lupita’s pics the best.

balmain-rihanna-spring-2014

balmain-spring-2014

In hindsight, Rihanna seems like an obvious choice for the rocker-chic house of Balmain.  While the brand has dabbled in more hardcore looks in the past, Spring’s pastels were decidedly more demure than the usual Balmain fare.  Enter RiRi.  The musician/muse lent her badass vibe to the Chanel-esque jackets with gold chain details, and the rest is history.  Fashion’s baddest fashionista’s will be dying to get their hands on this collection now that’s it’s been imbued with Rihanna’s signature brand of cool.

chloe-lou-doillon

chloe-spring-2014

While Lou Doillon (model, musician, daughter of Jane Birkin) might not be a household name yet, we think her latest campaign for Chloe might change that.  Her quintessentially French good looks and hard-edged beauty are a perfect match for Chloe’s ethereal, street-chic, and 70s-inspired Spring collection.  We can’t stop staring.

Are there any other perfectly-fronted Spring campaigns we missing?  (Not counting Miley for Marc- we covered that one here a few weeks ago!)

It Factor Friday: Miley Cyrus and Marc Jacobs

Marc-Jacobs-Miley_Cyrus

The newest Marc Jacobs ad campaign featuring Miley

Whatever your thoughts are on Miley Cyrus, you’ve got to admit that the girl’s got “It.”  People who hate her talk about her just as much as her hardcore Smilers, and her outrageous fashion choices are up for debate on a daily basis.   After establishing herself as a huge personality and style star, Miley reminded us that she’s actually got pipes with awesome acoustic performances on late night stages and award shows.  Is there anything she does that doesn’t make headlines?  Nope.

More Marc for Miley

Miley’s designer of choice lately has been Marc Jacobs, who’s a bit of an “It” guy himself.  After leaving Louis Vuitton last year to focus on bringing his A-game to his eponymous line, Marc recognized that Miley could give Marc Jacobs the boost the collection needs.  Cue the collaborative ad campaign, featuring Miley Cyrus decked out in Jacobs’ post-apocalyptic-meets-1800s Spring 2014 clothing.  The result is nothing short of amazing.

We love that Marc is bringing a new muse into his rotation (his other muses include Sophia Coppola and Giselle Bundchen), and we think Miley’s young spirit is a perfect fit for the fashion house.  It’s clear that these two “It” industry insiders adore each other; we can’t wait to see what happens next!

Culture Club: Art Basel

art-basel

Art Basel Miami Beach just wrapped up, and we’ve been poring over pictures from the week-long event (and cursing the lucky ones keeping warm in Miami) ever since.  Art Basel is the biggest communal gathering of the art world, and happens three times a year: in Basel (between Germany & Switzerland), Hong Kong, and Miami Beach.  This year over 250 worldwide galleries participated in the Miami Beach event, which drew about 75,000 visitors.  On top of that, almost 4,000 artists showcased their work!  Art Basel is one of the only times that modern masterworks of art mingle with pieces by emerging and relatively unknown artists.  That meeting of old and new is what’s keeping the art world fresh and on its toes!

While Art Basel is ostensibly about art, the fashion world has been creeping in and taking over for a few years now.  This year’s Art Basel was a full-blown fashion event, which makes sense- after all, fashion is wearable art, right?  Celebrities, editors, fashion photographers, models, and designers all made appearances at this year’s Art Basel and showed off their quirkiest outfits.  We’re obsessed!

Art Basel was the perfect excuse for the fashion community to break out their brights.  We loved Harley Vierra Newton in her retro yellow dress, and want to try out the bright shade of pink that this street style star accessorized with piles of statement necklaces.

Kyleigh Kuhn

Jewelry designer and curator Kyleigh Kuhn impressed us with her impeccable taste!  We haven’t seen too much of Kyleigh on the fashion scene yet, but the easy, breezy way she mixed separates at Art Basel has put her on our radar.  We can’t wait to see more of her masterful stripes/florals mix!

Delfina Delettrez

Another jewelry-world fixture, designer Delfina Delettrez, wowed in this grey and white feathery confection, and we loved the addition of orange sandals.  Orange and white is the color combo of the season- we’re taking a tip from Delfina and working this combo into our next outfit, ASAP.

Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz

Zoe Kravitz was another fave- she hit the romantic-goth nail on the head with this sheer black gown.  Dark lips and tribal jewelry were the perfect accessories.

Lastly, this Mary Katranzou postage dress was perfect at Art Basel!  Ultra-modern accessories like this lady’s futuristic sunglasses are an artsy touch.

Guys got in on the fashion action too!  Style icon and fashion show fixture James Goldstein rocked his signature animal skin jacket/hat combo, while Pharrell and Timo Weiland rocked the camo trend.  Both accessorized differently, though- Pharrell went with layers of chains on top of his tee, while Timo mixed prints like a pro in his polka-dotted button down.

We’re dreaming up our outfits for next year’s Art Basel Miami!  What would you wear?

The Pre-Fall Looks We Want to Wear Right Now

It’s kind of crazy that the Pre Fall 2014 collections are starting to come out- aren’t we still in the midst of Fall 2013?  The hardest thing about getting a sneak peek at the coming trends that fact the looks we’re lusting over won’t be available for about another year- but they’re so perfect for right now!

These are the Pre Fall 2013 looks that we’re most excited about:

Just Cavalli

pre fall just cavalli

Cavalli mixed a million trends into one look here, and it’s really doing it for us.  Bermuda shorts?  Check.  Screened tee?  Check.  Leather, colorblocking, and statement heels?  The gang’s all here!  We’d love to wear this whole outfit, but if we had to choose just one piece it would be the unbelievably cool shorts.  Could you do us a favor and release them early, Roberto?

Calvin Klein Collection

pre fall calvin

Three words:  Furry.  Pink.  Coat.  Three more words: Want.  It.  NOW!

Burberry Prorsum

pre fall burberry 2

The genius mix of textures in this black and forest green outfit is spot-on.  A leather/suede purse pops against shiny, silk printed pants, but the luxurious black fur coat steals the show.  We’d wear this coat with everything this winter!  Guess we’ll have to wait until next year…

Alexander Wang

pre fall alex wang 2

The dress is fine, but we want the boots.  With a miniskirt and bare legs, with tights and cutoff shorts, with skin-tight skinny jeans…yum.  Hand ‘em over, Alexander Wang.

Just Cavalli

pre fall just cavalli 2

And finally, another Just Cavalli look.  These wide-leg leather pants are such a fresh take on leather legwear, and the sequined peplum top (in the color of the season: cobalt) is flashy but feminine.  We want to wear this head-to-toe look on New Year’s Eve!

We’re going to try our hardest to recreate these Pre Fall 2014 looks with what’s available in stores (and our closets) right now, but we have a feeling we’re gonna have to indulge in the real deal next year!
