4 Steps To Luminous Complexion Perfection

I love the look of luminous skin in the summer.

Your complexion doesn’t have to be perfect since the warm California sun is a flattering filter enough, but when the moon grows bright and the lights of the city begin to shine, nothing is more beautiful than luminous skin.

Mind you,I said luminous, not shiny. The line between the two isn’t as fine as you’d think. The trick to achieving luminosity is having radiance everywhere on your face except for your T-zone-  your forehead and your nose. Though we aim for the effortless, “this is my skin” look, it does take a few steps.

Here’s 4 step cheat sheet for that California chic glow that makes everyone look like the human equivalent of a nightingale!

Step 1: Moisturize

After cleansing (preferably with cleanser and water—not wipes!)  make sure to prep the skin with a luscious application of a moisturizer. For those with normal to dry skin opt for a cream *1. For those with oily or combination skin, go with a hydrating gel*2.

1. Perricone Face Finishing Moisturizer – luxury in a bottle. Features Alpha Lipoic Acid, which is supposed to be the world’s strongest antioxidant. You will also love the natural rose scent it has.s1159771-main-hero-300

2. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel – absorbs to the skin beautifully without feeling like the product is on the surface. Hydrating but not uber-moisturizing- and yes, there is a difference.

Step 2: Primer

This often overlooked step could be the nudge that takes you from a housewife to a Real Housewife. A primer, well, primes the skin for foundation and the rest of the face color. Depending on which one you use, a primer could color correct any redness or jaundice (*3), fill in any noticeable pores (*4), or simply just smooth the surface out and mattify (*5)—all while keeping your makeup on longer.

*3. Smashbox Color Correcting Primers – so much variety! Whether is a dark spot correcting one, an oil free one, a hydrating one or a green one that corrects redness!

*4. Benefit Porefessional – Does exactly what it states. Best in the market for softening (partly filling in) the look of pores..

benefit                *5. Lancome La Base – goes on clear and beautifully. A staple in every make-up artist’s kit.

Step 3: Foundation

For a summer night out, I love the look of a radiant skin—matte, over-powdered skin, to me, looks corpse-like. Glow, people, glow! This makeup look is the perfectly suited to those with dry skin (*6-7), but those with oily skin could still benefit! (*8-9)

*6. Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (Light – Medium Coverage) – best for dry to normal skin types.

*7. MAC Face and Body Foundation (Light, Buildable Coverage) – Water based, best for dry to normal skin types.

*8. Nars Sheer Glow – (Medium Coverage) – Best for Normal to Oily Skin

*9. Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation (Full coverage) – All skin types

Step 4: Tinted Moisturizers, BB’s and CC’s

Though foundations are a staple- there is no better time to bring out Tinted Moisturizers, BB and CC Creams than summer. Tinted moisturizers are exactly what they sound like: Moisturizers with tint or pigments. BB stands for Beauty Balm, which incorporate skincare benefits to tinted moisturizers. CC stands for Color Correction, meaning that CC creams typically are BB creams focused on preventing and correcting dark spots and age spots. TM’s (*), BB’s (*) and CC’s (*) all can be worn without a moisturizer underneath!

*10. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – provides more coverage than most other tinted moisturizers in the market and is beautifully blendable.

*11. Bobbi Brown Tinted Balm – This beautiful balm (luxuriously oil-based, not to be associated with Beauty Balms) is perfect for those with very dry skin. Provides the most beautiful sheen on the face. If you have oily or combo skin, try and avoid!

*12. Urban Decay Naked BB Cream – Undetectable on the skin, your skin just looks simply better- this is due to the Optical Blur than it features! 2256112

Some buy Vogue for the pretty pictures: Our Favorite Campaigns of Fall 2014

A great edition of Time has to have minimal advertising– I mean who wants to have to flip through endless advertisements for Activia? On the contrary, a  great edition of Vogue (or Elle or Harper’s or whatever) contains the best, most ravishing advertisements one can find- the season’s latest fashion campaigns. These campaigns can be so chic, so sexy, so sophisticated that sometimes, we can’t help but skip through the articles and “only look at the pretty pictures.” Middle school style.

Here are our favorite campaigns (reading distractions) of the season.

Jeremy Scott takes aver Moschino with a bang– or more appropriately, a burp. The young designer debuts as the new Moschino Creative Director with a McDonald’s inspired collection. The runway collection has been described by some critics as “trashy” and “over the top.” Other critics, on the other hand, enjoyed the playful collection by the young designer and described the collection as “delicious.”

Because of how the collection was shown on the runway and the critics’ sometimes harsh reviews, we expected Moschino to put out an ad campaign just as “over the top” and “delicious” but instead, what we got was an elegant ad campaign with some of New York’s most sophisticated.

Celebrated photographer Steven Meisel captured models Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmerman, Saskia De Brauw and Caroline Murphy in what seems to be a formal, high brow get together. But if you look closely, you can see the cheese  on Saskia’s dress and the other playful, clever details inspired by the world’s most well-known fast food chain.

And what’s more Elegant than Queen Linda? The “M” on the quilted shoulder bag does not stand for “McDonalds” when the Chameleon Queen carries it.

It can stand for money, madame, magnificent or maybe even Moschino.

Calvin Klein

There’s not much to say about the Fall 2014 Clavin Klein ad campaign promotion the hashtag #mycalvins. There’s little to say but lots to feel. Little words, lots of lust. Little speaking, lots of moans. hbz-best-ads-ck-01-lg

Photographer Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott reminds us why we pinned photos like these on out bedroom walls in the 90’s. (Kate Moss and Marky Mark, anyone?). Model Lara Stone is modernized in this ad mostly by the (strategically placed) hashtag.

hbz-best-ads-ck-03-lgLara is joined by Anerican model Matt Terry.

Of course the Calvin Klein girl has a boyfriend. Or maybe they’re just friends. With lots of benefits we all wanna partake in.

Party supergirl Cara Delevigne, turns her head away from the London party scene for just a little to enjoy all that the beautiful English countryside has to offer.

article-2676382-1F4CA37700000578-508_640x784Cara sports traditional English designs like plaid and argyle– all in the details.
hbz-best-ads-MLBRY_AW14_CARA_KHAKI_DPS_300dpi-lgPhotographer Tim Walker captures Cara in traditional English staples like rainboots and plaid, all with the London cool nobody can take away from Cara.

How The West Will Be Won

Portlandia told you to put a bird on it. I’m telling you to put a fringe on it.

From Chanel to Alexander Wang to Tracy Reese, western motifs flooded Spring and Fall 2014 Runways. Eye catching pieces worthy of even the Wildest West included leather handbags lined in suede fringe, heavy denim, oversize cowboy hats, rugged leathers, and even the occasional bolero. City Slickers will delight in melding modern bohemia, tribal touches, and John Wayne for a gloriously wearable incantation of our romanticized nostalgia of the West of days yore.”Pair festive fringe with leather and denim, hand-embroidered cotton with beaded jewelry, and gingham with woven straw accessories,” Vogue advises “and leave the hokey getups for the rodeo.”

Nothing says ‘urban cowboy’ like fringed accessories, and the tattered accents roamed virtually every Western inspired Collection.I’m just feelin’ the fringe this season,” Designer Tracy Reese said backstage of her Fall 2014 show, where models walked the Tracy Reese runway in fringed, handkerchief-inspired shawls.“This is basically what we would want to pack in our suitcases were we taking a trip to Texas”, describes Cushnie of Cushnie et Ochs, “It was city slickers. It wasn’t overly Western, but very much sort of this urban fantasy of Western life. Our urban fantasy of what it would be like to go to Texas.”

Tibi and Charlotte Ronson channeled Cowboy’s And Indians with exaggeratedly oversized cowboy hats, a cheeky tribute to the broad brimmed panama/floppy hats currently en vogue with hipster fashionistas. Stuart Verves was all about the fringed suede purse and the ever sensational Mara Hoffman designed fringed ponchos festooned with one of her signature bright prints. Tommy Hilfiger‘s Fall 2014 collection featured an outdoorsy beige shirt dress embroidered with red arrows and accented with camel colored suede.

Real life differs wildly from the Runway, so Glamour offered these 3 fantastic Do’s and Don’ts for wearing Western:

  1. DO belt it
“Cinching a blanket cape with a belt makes the look wearable instead of overpowering,” advises Gunlocke Fenton. “Plus, it’s more girly than gaucho if you show off your waist.”
  2. DO tie one on Replace your usual necklace with a little black ribbon or bow for a feminine take on the bolo. “It’s a simple way to update your classic white button-down,” says Gunlocke Fenton. “Shirting is everywhere now and this feels fresh.
  3. DON’T go overboard “A Stetson hat, a longer skirt, or a fringed bag are all great ways to dip your toe in the trend,” Gunlocke Fenton says. “But wear just one or two pieces at a time. You don’t want to look like you’re wearing a costume.”

The stylehaüs stylists took 5 Western-inspired Runway looks and created wearable, Street Style ready outfits for each ensemble.

Fashion Month is officially over.  After scoping the offerings from New York, London, Milan, and Paris designers, we see a few big bag trends on the horizon for Fall 2014.  The size of your bag (mostly smaller), the shape of your bag (structured) and even the way you hold your bag (forget about the strap!) is about to change!  Here are the biggest bag trends of Fall 2014:

Small trunk bags

Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, and Dolce & Gabbana Fall 2014

Louis Vuitton’s Petit Malle, or small trunk, is perfection.  We love how Nicolas Ghesquiere updated the standby LV logo bags by resizing the most enduring icon of Louis Vuitton’s legacy: the steam trunck.  The result is super cute, ladylike, and modern, and we can’t wait to get our hands on one (in our dreams- can you image the waitlist?).  Dolce & Gabanna showed similarly shaped bags with their collection, including one case embellished with bugs and sparkly flowers.  We’ll take one of each, please.

Moschino Fall 2014

Chanel Fall 2014

Quirky, “ironic” bags were big this season, with Moschino and Chanel showing some of the best options.  Jeremy Scott’s inaugural collection for Moschino was polarizing to say the least (did you love it or hate it?), but we’re totally on board.  His “Happy Meal” bag is high on our Fall wishlist, and we can’t get over the “Soda” bag, either.  Karl Lagerfeld took things up a notch at Chanel with his “Chanel Shopping Center” concept.  A classic quilted Chanel 2.55 wrapped up like a slab of ground beef is particularly amusing, but we’re really feel the “Lait de Coco” milk purse- amazing!!

Alexander Wang Fall 2014

Alexader Wang was one of the first shows of Fashion Month, and he really set the bar high.  His utilitarian, multi-purpose purses were perhaps some of the best pieces in the collection, and we can see them being among the next crop of “It” bags.  Carabineers attached water bottles and utility carry-alls to one main shoulder strap- the perfect bag to carry through the Zombie Apocolypse.

Scrap the Strap

Celine, Gucci, and Chloe Fall 2014

Designers decided to scrap the straps on their bags this season!  Celine’s version fits nicely on your arm, but requires a firm grip on bottom.  Gucci’s models scooped up tophandle bags and wore them up to the elbow.  Chloe’s extra-large clutch was hoisted up under the models’ armpits, and looks big enough to fit everything you’d ever need.

What were your favorite bags of the season?

Unique Spring Jackets

Valentino Spring’13

Chanel Spring’13

Helmut Lang Spring’13

Cacharel Spring’13

Michael Kors Spring’13

Balmain Spring’13

Prepare yourself in style for one of the most unpredictable seasons of the year! We have entered the transition phase between the chilly winter and scorching summer, where weather-proofing your wardrobe against wind and rain, while staying cool under the sunshine (and yet, fashionably dressed) can get tricky.  A smart investment for these fashionably, “trying times” is a chic spring jacket!

As the spring runways have revealed, bright colors and fun prints are a loud-and-clear fashion statement this season, and an eye-catching spring jacket is a great way to brave the outdoors while also looking anything but ordinary. Designers like Valentino, Cacharel and Michael Kors graced us with their reinvention of the raincoat, successfully sheltering even the most chic fashionista! If spring-leathers and bomber jackets are more your style, Balmain and Helmut Lang featured jackets in their spring collection made up of striking colors and texture-blocking that have us feeling the cool, blissful breeze already.

The red (or purple) carpet is not just for adults! Some of our favorite, trendy, teenagers looked stylish in designer looks at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards on March 23rd in downtown Los Angeles. From crop tops, to floral dresses, jean jackets, and ruffled looks, these fashion-forward stars looked every bit spring-appropriate for this fun event! We noticed that many of these runway looks were modified on the red carpet, but we love what we see! Selena Gomez changed her look up completely, making this gorgeous Oscar de la Renta gown into a trendy top. Pregnant Fergie also opted for a completely different style of this Mary Katrantzou dress and she added a pop of yellow with her heels to finish off this colorful ensemble. Trendsetter Willow Smith made this spring 2013 Chanel dress all her own, as she paired it with a cropped jean jacket, Chanel combat boots, and yellow socks. We felt the styling made this look completely age-appropriate and edgy, reminding us that you can never be too young for Chanel!

Between the runway and red carpet, which look do you prefer?

So many designers incorporated sheer, translucent fabrics into their spring/summer 2013 collections, making it one of the biggest trends of the season! Featherweight materials gave the collections a lightness and airy quality that is perfect for spring style. Chiffon and organza replaced traditional opaque fabrics in pieces ranging from pencil skirts, to cocktail dresses, and even gowns. Giambattista Valli gave classic ladylike dresses a sexy edge with sheer skirts and details. At Akris, everyday basic pieces, such as black blazers, were transformed with the addition of a sheer neckline and sleeves. Meanwhile, Chanel created an entire matching pantsuit out of lightweight sheer fabrics, complete with chiffon details at the cuffs and hems. Sheer pieces are a fun and wearable spring trend that we love; incorporate it into your everyday wardrobe for a subtly sexy look that is right on trend!

The Grand Palais in Paris played host to Karl Lagerfeld’s latest vision for Chanel’s fall and winter collection, which featured a 50 ft. high revolving globe in the middle of the runway.

As Chanel was naturally our most highly anticipated show, Lagerfeld delivered with a stunning fall collection that emphasizes what couture and fashion are really all about. Staying true to the Chanel brand, a majority of the models wore the classic Chanel tweed looks with dresses, long coats, and jackets. As yarned wool is the key Chanel material, plenty of variations (mostly in black) were incorporated into the looks, followed by reddish, cream, and pink variations. One thing that stuck out most of all, were the thigh-high leather stockings that completed many of the models’ looks, paired with long coats, skirts, and jackets, giving off the ultimate schoolgirl-chic vibe. Accessories included little globe clutch bags on chains, furry aviator caps, and of course fabulous Chanel bags with notable colors such as yellow and burgundy. With fashion icons and European royalty filling up the Grand Palais, this was one show not to be missed in the fashion world. We are loving everything; from the chunky accessories to the floral jackets, shoes, and everything in between, Chanel truly is the ultimate in chic couture and the show has us dreaming for fall!
