It Factor Friday: Pink

pink-fashion-4

We’re not sure if we can refer to a pastel tone as a “dark horse”…but pastel pink was definitely the dark horse trend of Fall 2013.  The It color of the season was seen on tons of the Fall 2013 runways, if not a little sparingly: most designers dipped their toes into pastel waters for the traditionally-dark season, but that little taste was enough to make fashion influencers dive head-first into the trend!

Pops of pink took the Carven, Paul Smith, and Mulberry AW13 collections to new heights, and regular high fashion heavy-hitters like Marc Jacobs, Prada, and Celine featured the girlish hue too.  Popular tones ranged from the bubblegum variety to a dusty rose shade, from ballerina blush to pastel pink.  While the color barely made a dent in the runway shows of Fall, it has dominated the street style world ever since!

If you want to add the It Factor to your look, your best bet is incorporating pink into your winter wardrobe.   You can do this pretty much however you want- a big pink coat is sure to make you an overnight style sensation, and pink fuzzy sweaters are a darling way to throw it back to the mod 60s.  A pink midi skirt is a sweet-as-pie take on the trend!

Balance out girly pink with sporty sneaks!

The one rule for wearing pink?  Make sure your look isn’t overly sweet.  Balance out the saccharine color with something a little off, like frayed cutoff shorts or sporty Nikes.

Polka dots are one pattern that typically has spring written all over it, but the runways were showing it as a hot print for fall as well!  Whether you deem it appropriate for the office or feel it’s more of a playful daytime option, polka dots strike a light balance between textural intrigue, darker hues, and a look to the warmer season ahead. Polka dots are a fun, traditional way to add a playful element to your look and can be worn in a multitude of ways. Go for a bold, patterned look by opting for a full polka dot ensemble, or play it fashionably safe and mix and match with solid colors. Pairing polka dot accessories to your look will also add an element of playfulness, so wear a scarf, pair of shoes (we love these spring 2013 Pierre Hardy ones) or even some nail polish! From the runways, to street styles, editorials, and celebrity fashion, polka dots are an undeniable trend that will be sure to add femininity and whimsy to your style!

Sarah Burton delivered a breathtaking, pearl-encrusted Alexander McQueen show that made us think of an incredibly stylish Elizabethan tale. With floor length gowns, gold embellishments, headpieces, feathers, and puffed sleeves, these looks truly resemble something out of a couture fairy tale and they took our breath away. The pearl embellished details from head-to-toe (including tights and boots) were absolutely stunning and feminine, and the feathered sandals were a fun and chic finish for the looks. With chunky silver belts and intricate details, this show was truly a stunning work of art.

Featuring lace collars, long floral dresses, and scalloped details, the Valentino F/W Fall ’13 show featured beautiful and intricate creations that highlighted a chic and playful spin on ultra-feminine clothing. There is no question that these clothes are exquisitely made, and just a couple of steps short of Haute Couture and Valentino went for a much more frilly look than in years past. With lace collars and cuffs, the collection will be sought after come fall, and the looks are very versatile for a multitude of occasions. Combining cashmere and lace gave off a delicate and lady-like image, while the leather dresses and unexpected pops of color jazzed things up. The oriental-inspired floral patterns on both the long and shorter dresses were an unexpected delight, and overall there were plenty of gowns that we expect to be gracing the red carpet in the fall!

The Grand Palais in Paris played host to Karl Lagerfeld’s latest vision for Chanel’s fall and winter collection, which featured a 50 ft. high revolving globe in the middle of the runway.

As Chanel was naturally our most highly anticipated show, Lagerfeld delivered with a stunning fall collection that emphasizes what couture and fashion are really all about. Staying true to the Chanel brand, a majority of the models wore the classic Chanel tweed looks with dresses, long coats, and jackets. As yarned wool is the key Chanel material, plenty of variations (mostly in black) were incorporated into the looks, followed by reddish, cream, and pink variations. One thing that stuck out most of all, were the thigh-high leather stockings that completed many of the models’ looks, paired with long coats, skirts, and jackets, giving off the ultimate schoolgirl-chic vibe. Accessories included little globe clutch bags on chains, furry aviator caps, and of course fabulous Chanel bags with notable colors such as yellow and burgundy. With fashion icons and European royalty filling up the Grand Palais, this was one show not to be missed in the fashion world. We are loving everything; from the chunky accessories to the floral jackets, shoes, and everything in between, Chanel truly is the ultimate in chic couture and the show has us dreaming for fall!

We are obsessed with the Céline totes that have been hitting streets everywhere, so we were anxiously anticipating the runway collection at Paris Fashion Week! Céline delivered a beautifully soft palette for their fall looks, and incorporated plaids (a common fall runway trend) into their oversized coats. Pairing delicate, feminine tones with colored pants, boots, and plenty of gray, the collection had a classic, minimal-chic feel. We were hoping to see some of the traditional totes, but loved that the soft clutch bags that the models held close were made of the same fabrics as the clothes themselves. In a nod to the 90s trend of wrapping your sweater around your waist, the designer showed a variety of coats and dresses with wrapped sleeves, offering a fashion-forward touch to the minimalist collection. Incorporating a feminine feel to her creations, designer Phoebe Philo sent the message that the Céline image was softening up for fall. “In other words, exit the too-cool-for-school tomboy and enter the lady.”
