Suede Parade On Spring 2015 Runways

Who doesn’t love a 1970’s throwback? The soft and devilishly delicate form of leather is scheduled to make a comeback come Spring 2015. Jason Wu’s best look was a showstopping, semi-seafoam green dress with a deep v and high slit.

Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren sent out preppy but not prim suede suits in navy and forest green that I’m just dying to integrate into your workwear wardrobe. Derek Lam and Karen Walker had a more playful take, showing suede ensembles in pastel purple and sunny yellow.

2015’s suede designs are distinctive not just in their hue and material, but in their modest formality. Altuzarra, Ralph Lauren, and Jason Wu created office-optimal suede dresses ready to revive weary working women and animate ambitious upstarts. The matching suede sets seen at Michael Kors and Derek Lam mix the structure of a suit with retro cheekiness to delightful results.

T Magazine of The NYT traced the linerage of next Season’s strong streak of suede:

The material was first spotted in New York at Derek Lam, but it really started to trend in Milan. At Gucci, the creative director Frida Giannini presented a boho-charged collection of floral, beaded minidresses, colored fur vests and the suede belted dress above, that looked straight out of the brand’s archives. Yesterday in Paris, the designer Claire Waight Keller introduced a similar silhouette on the Chloé runway: a shorter, belted jacket paired with shorts. And finally at Loewe, the British designer Jonathan Anderson used leather and suede heavily in his debut show for the Spanish luxury leather-goods brand — which peaked with this buff suede trench coat with wide-leg trousers. The bag reinforced the message loud and clear: suede is in.

Head to toe suede might seem intimidating at first, but don’t be discouraged: there are plenty of ways to make this look modern and convenient for any girl on the go. Since suede is naturally a loose, thin fabric, you’re going to want to add form with clean lines and solid structure.

It’s A Mad, Mod World

Short cuts and retro rock are making a comeback in 2014.

Designers paired micro-minis with low-heeled boots for a feminine yet seriously sophisticated set of ensembles that flatter a myriad of body types. Runway references to the days of Beatlemania and Twiggy triumph included the rock n’ roll silhouettes at St. Laurent, embroidered bibs of Gucci, and ultra low waistlines at D-Squared.

Italian Mod: Gucci Fall 2014

Let’s be honest: no decade comes back into vogue as frequently or with such enthusiasm as the swinging 60’s. We can’t quite quit those wild days of innovation in fashion, music, and culture. And why should we? It’s just too good to abandon for more than a couple Seasons.

An A-line or super square cut is vital the modern mod mini: loose enough to leave some room for imagination, structured enough to be daytime appropriate, and short enough to show off those long, tan Cali girl stems.

Father’s Day Gift Guide: Stylish Presents for Superior Dads

Stylehaüs Father’s Day Gift Guide: 7 Stylish Presents For Superior Dads

fday3

Father’s Day is once again upon us, and we’re thrilled for the annual opportunity to put aside our Daddy issues and show thanks for paternal care with thoughtful gift giving and sweet speeches.

Dads are notoriously hard to shop for: their taste is dubious, their trendiness is often nonexistent, and their communication skills halted at puberty. Worst of all, Dads rarely say what they actually want. Instead, they’ll simply say “I have everything I could ever want” and then start talking about something super dull like golf or nature.

It is a rare Dad that truly appreciates or even gives a second thought the never-ending ebb and flow of fashion. Don’t despair: our stylists have assembled a list of Father’s Day Gift ideas guaranteed to bring delight and approval to even the fiercest Fathers.

1. Classic Leather Wallet

wallets

What better gift to give Daddy than the gift of carrying cash in style? Think of the positive associations: every time he looks at money, precious Papa will think of you.

Plus, wallets are one of the few Dad friendly luxury accessories. Even the most modest man will accept and enjoy the gorgeous status symbol of a chic wallet.

Wallets are a gift that will be paid back threefold he’s contemplating whether you REALLY deserve that YSL crossbody for a birthday present and his lovely leather accessory reminds him of your boundless and utterly selfless generosity. You’re such a nice person!

Brahmin Billfold Wallet in Black Melbourne, $98. Santiago Gonzalez Crocodile Wallet, $595. Gucci ‘Microguccissimma’ Wallet in Navy, $300. Giorgio Armani Hammered Leather Wallet with ID holder, $395.

2. Poised Planner

planners

If your Dad is anything like mine, he’s partial to long-winded monologues about the importance of punctuality, discipline, moderation, and a myriad of other tedious traits.

Dads are practical. They like gifts that make sense. That’s why they have such difficulty comprehending the importance of accessorizing: it has no (TANGIBLE) benefit. By giving your Father a planner, you not only remind him of his own incredible importance, but you subtly signal that you too are a responsible person who understands the beauty of proper time management.

To me, the height of luxury is for even the smallest item to be a gorgeous piece in it’s own right. By sneaking some style in a stereotypically insignificant item, you’re giving dear Dad a taste of the good life. Without giving him the opportunity to blather on about growing up in a cardboard shack or whatever other guilt trip he adores to lovingly send you on.

Mulberry Leather Agenda in Natural Oak, $470. Moleskine Planner, $30. Trussardi Planner, $149. AcquaDiParma Planner, $148.

3. Super Soft Blanket

blankets

Even the MANLIEST Man can appreciate a super soft surface. Everyone likes to be comfortable, but Dads LOVE the serene sweetness of uninhibited comfort.

Super soft blankets are one of those items you don’t know you want until you get one, and then it’s something you can’t live without. Plus, Fathers aren’t exactly known for their glittering social calendar: blankets can be enjoyed solo, in the comfort of his Man cave.

Whether he’s tucking for a good night’s sleep or slumped over the couch watching the big game, your Dad will smile with simple joy every time he snuggles into his new blanket and thinks of the wonderful daughter he raised. American

Blanket Pattern Fleece Throw, $77. Missoni Home Pereseo Blanket, $775. Portico Wrapture in Faux Fur, $80. Barney’s New York Havana Herringbone Blanket, $335.

4. Regal Robe

robe

Is there any image more pervasive in American pop culture than the haggard all American Dad, wrapped in a ratty robe and clutching a mug of coffee as he retrieves the morning paper from the front steps?

Yeah, that picture needs a revamp. Stat. And you’re just the girl to do it! Like a fancy blanket, the luxury robe is a delight men seldom buy for themselves.

This Father’s Day, give your Dad the gift of waking up and shutting down in comfort and sophistication with one of these masculine yet stylish robes.

Derek Rose Satin-Stripe Dobby Dot Robe in Navy, $400.00. Hanro Night & Day Knit Robe in Black Iris, $218.00. UGG Australia Brunswick Robe in Navy, $145.00. Neiman Marcus Cashmere Robe in Charcoal, $712.

5. Leather Jacket

jackets

Unorthodox? Yes. Leather jackets are as synonymous with ‘cool’ as Dads are with ‘uncool’. Unless your Father is a member of Duck Dynasty or rides a hog, he probably hasn’t owned a leather jacket since the swinging 70s.

Yet deep inside every lame Dad lies a young man who, at one point or another, desperately wanted to be cool. Age, maturity, and acceptance may have diminished that deeply human desire for street cred, but it still lingers on in even the dreariest of Dads.

This Fathers day, give him the gift of cool. He’ll love it. I promise.

Dsquared2 Mixed-Media Moto Jacket, $1460. Vince Patch-Pocket Leather Bomber Jacket, $696. Diesel Bunmi Sheepskin Leather Jacket, $798. Gucci Leather Safari Jacket, $3,483.

6. Stylish Sunnies

Father's Day

Duh duh duh duh duh. BAD TO THE BONE. Duh Duh Duh Duh. I DRINK ALONE CAUSE I PREFER TO BE BY MYSELF. Etc, etc. Inside every middle-old man lies a moonshine chugging, salt of the earth REAL MAN who DGAF.

Left to his own devices, most men will continue wearing the same lame shades until their trusty sunglasses are broken or lost. Then, they will buy an exact replica of those sunglasses and repeat the process all over again.

Men are creatures of habit, and Fatherhood seems to exacerbate monotonous tendencies. Break the cycle by grabbing chic sunnies that lend sophistication, not silliness, to even the most conservative Daddy.

Oliver Peoples Wyler 54 Oversized Sunglasses, Dark Tortoiseshell, $325. TOMS Eyewear Navigator Sunglasses, Gunmetal, $139. Persol Retro Keyhole Round Sunglasses, Terra Di Siena, $370. Tom Ford Marlon Aviator Sunglasses, Rose Golden, $360.

7. Bold Belt

belts

Belts are hideously unappreciated members of the accessory realm. Unlike, say, a bracelet, belts perform a specific and necessary function: preventing your pants from falling down.

In this sense, belts are a lot like Dads, who perform the specific and necessary function of preventing their darling daughters from one of life’s ubiquitous black holes or just falling down during a teenage Smirnoff black out.

Give Dad the gift of snaz with a mature yet trendy belt that will keep his pants riding high. Although hopefully not too high. You might have to have a talk with him about the high pants. Just a thought.

Salvatore Ferragamo Vara Sardegna Oversized Leather Belt, Dark Brown, $360. Tom Ford T Buckle Belt, Oxblood, $730. Lanvin Men’s Patent and Suede Belt, Black, $395. Fendi Reversible Braided Leather FF Men’s Belt, Navy, $450.

Trend Report: Psychedelic Spring

In one of my favorite scenes of The Devil Wear Prada, Miranda aka Meryl shreds tired suggestions for the spring issue in one deliciously scathing swoop:

spring1.png

As usual, Miranda’s insightful cruelty is on point. Flowers for spring time have been done up and down every which way since the beginning of fashion time. Yet, it’s undeniable that after months of deep winter hues, we’re ready to break out of the black cocoon and pop some brights in our look. So what’s a cool girl in the spring of 2014 to do? My solution: beachy psychedelics, chrome glow, and nouveau tribals to bring the bright without losing your edge.

Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection includes sophisticated psychedelic prints in shades of burgundy and sumatra that will blend flawlessly with your dark winter leathers for an immaculate transition from winter to spring.

LazyOaf, an irreverent UK-based label popular amongst the hipster hordes, combined psychedelic prints with Shinjuku mania for their Spring 2014 Lookbook. You don’t have to be a 90’s kid to flip over the collection’s eye-catching patterns and crafted construction.

UNIF’s Spring Collection blurs dreamy psychedelic, candy coated color, and DGAF attitude for an assortment that is just so, so good. So. damn. good. Let’s break my 3 favorite LSD trip looks piece by piece. Tie dye is far from my cup of tea, but the flattering yet outré dress design is perfect for walking along a Malibu beach, wind whipping in my hair, jasmine incense wafting through the sea breeze… Hey, it could happen! Look #2 is simple psychedelic with that chrome finish that’s all the rage amongst cool girls from Silverlake to Bed-Stuy. Finally, UNIF’s fringed kimono references Liza Minnelli and Lisa Frank for a new apex of loungewear ideal for informal outdoor brunches or glamorous lazy days.

Mara Hoffman’s Spring 2014 is like a sprinkle of peyote to the eyeball. Her psychedelic patterns manage to be both crisp and complex, with heavily saturated colors accenting geometric patterns and lean, languid swirls. It’s a fashion world cliché to refer to clothes as art, but Mara Hoffman’s impeccably cut pieces are pops of post modern mecca to swath over our mere human form.

MARINA MONDAY: FASHION WEEK 2014 BEAUTY TRENDS

In this week’s Marina Monday post, Marina shares her favorite new beauty looks of the season.

I’ve been loving a lot of the new collections coming out of Fashion Month- Alexander Wang and Matthew Williamson have been my favorites so far.  Aside from tons of clothing inspiration, fashion month is giving me a new outlook on beauty too!  Two shows in particular stood out to me: Giles and Gucci.

giles-fall-makeupgiles-fall-2014-makeup

The Giles show was a fun mixture of 60s throwback and modern/moody.  While I loved the clothing parading down the runway, it was the eye makeup that really got me.  Dark black eyeshadow (my favorite) covered the lid, while bright blue eyeshadow lined the bottom rim.  This is such a fun take on my usual all-over-black eyeshadow routine, and I think I might have to try it.  The Giles blue is a little intense for me, so I’ll test the look with a dark navy on bottom.

gucci-makeup-pat-mcgrathgucci-makeup-pat-mcgrath

Gucci also got in on the 60s theme, and the makeup matched the clothes.  The eyeliner shown was a new take on the classic cat-eye; upper lids and lower rims were lined with black eyeliner, but the lines never touched in the outer corners.  The result was fresh-faced and eye-catching!  Since I normally line both my upper and lower rims anyway, I might try to switch things up in the near future by imitating the Gucci girls.

What’s been your favorite beauty moment of Fall 2014?

Ralph Lauren Spring 2013

Spring is just about here and with the weather getting warmer, the days are a bit longer and spring bloom is in full effect.  It’s finally time to ditch those winter jackets, lock up the heavy leathers and transition the most important piece in your wardrobe (your blazer, of course) with a pop of color. Designers like Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Salvatore Ferragamo featured jackets with a vibrant color palette to warm us up to the spring season, and we are loving the splash of personality added to such a classic look. The spring 2013 catwalk featured plenty of male models clad in colorful coats and bright lightweight jackets, a perfect piece for the season. Guys, do not be afraid to break out of your typical navy, black and brown hues and opt for a vibrant yellow or orange!

Music’s biggest night has also become one of fashion’s most exciting events, as country singers, pop stars, and our favorite celebrities, celebrate music in style at the annual Grammy Awards. Downtown L.A. has never looked so glamorous (except maybe at last year’s award show) as our favorite celebrities grace the red carpet in beautiful gowns and fabulous accessories. The Grammys are also a night of fashion firsts (and lasts), as we will never forget Nicki Minaj as Little Red Riding Hood, Sasha Gradiva’s guns as accessories, and Skylar Grey’s yellow fringed disaster.

Although collectively this year’s styles were more disappointing than anticipated, a few of our favorite show-stoppers wowed us with their choices and this year had quite a variety of styles. Rihanna was the style winner of the night for us, looking red-hot in a sizzling Azzedine Alaia dress, Neil Lane jewelry, Manolo Blahnik shoes, and red lips and nails to match. Her long, beach waves looked perfect and her makeup was natural and flawless. For us, Rihanna was a best dressed nominee, hands down! Taylor Swift usually plays it safe on the red carpet, and while she opted for her typical slender fitting long dress, we love the silver embellishments and cutouts of her J. Mendel gown paired with her braided hair, giving her an all-around Grecian goddess vibe. Adele was another celebrity who we love to see come out of her fashion shell, even though she always looks amazing. Veering away from her typical black or navy gown, Adele opted for a 50’s throwback look in this floral Valentino dress and looked feminine and beautiful. We applaud her for going outside of her normal attire and think this playful full skirt dress is great for spring!

Last but never least, Beyoncé went against the fashion grain in a stand-out black and white jumpsuit by Osman for his spring 2013 collection. The singer looked incredible as she completed her dual-tone look with a black Swarovski clutch, black peep-toe pumps, coordinating geometric bangles on each wrist, and bright-red lipstick for a pop of color. While we would have loved to see a glamorous gown from her, we love that she took a fashion risk and mixed it up.

Who should the fashion Grammy go to?

For now, we can focus on their fabulous outfits from the night: Jessica Chastain pumped up the glamour effect in this black Givenchy number with Christian Louboutin heels and wavy locks. Naomi Watts took a more causal route wearing an A.L.C. jacket and shirt, Theyskens for Theory pants, Christian Louboutin shoes, and a Gucci bag. Both Naomi and Jessica seem to be wearing the same Louboutin pumps, which are versatile for practically everything in your wardrobe and you can never go wrong with them. Emma Stone looked like a true Hollywood movie star in this silk a-line dress by Andrew Gn and black pointed pumps, and we especially love how she channeled the 1950’s in this glamorous get-up! Last but certainly not least, Amy Adams wore this gorgeous black lace cocktail dress paired with nude pumps and simple earrings.
