Triple Tip Thursday

Fresh from NYFW Spring 2015: Colored Leather, Cinched Belts, and Dreamy Dip Dye!

1. Colored Leather

When black is too basic.

966x623

Last week’s NYFW was revelatory in many ways. As a card carrying leather lover, I was delighted to see so many ensembles of my favorite material in every shade imaginable. In particular, Proenza Schouler’s bright to the point of borderline neon leather pieces made my heart skip a beat. A fabulously flexible material, leather can be constructed into clothes for any occasion or environment.

I’ll never surrender or stop loving a classic black leather jacket- it’s called a classic for a reason- but if you want to really blow the world away, go bold and get noticed in colorful leather!

2

Just make sure to keep the rest of your ensemble neutral- runway models might be able to pull off head to toe fire engine red leather, but normal people might end up looking like lost costume party guests.

2. Skinny Belt

Cinch everything.

1

The one accessory you must acquire (although I hope you acquire more than one) for Fall/Winter 2014 is an elegant belt. Last week’s shows were dominated by looks cinched neatly at the waist, even though what lay beneath the belt varied wildly from show to show.

If there’s one thing all designers can agree on, it’s that belts are back and borderline mandatory. The belt to have is a leather waist-whittling piece, with a twist. Cinching, the new trend about to go blockbuster, demands a belt that’s anything but matchy matchy.

Michael_Kors_spring_summer_2015_collection_New_York_Fashion_Week1

For a street style friendly look, choose a belt that doesn’t match OR violently mismatch, but simply strikes and onlooker as slightly out of place. Like you just tossed it on as an afterthought before making your way out into the world, effortlessly stylish. If they only knew!

Put a glamorous twist on the skinny belt trend by adding jewel details.

3. Dip Dye

Luxurious boho chic is all about the color blend.

dip1

Indie brands like Tia Cibani and Costello Tagliapietra plucked my heart and, ultimately, purse strings with softly dip dyed garments that strike me as the height of eco friendly chic.

Even the gas guzzling carnivores among us must acknowledge the subtle, let haunting beauty of luxurious fabrics dipped in heady hues and blended together in that oh so recognize dip dye manner.

Don’t worry, I’m not advocating you to break out your bored college shirt creations! Tia Cibani mixed natural with structured elements by applying the dip dye to crisp, tailored pieces such as vests and shifts. The contrast between edge and blend is absolutely divine!

Throwback Thursday: Bruce Springsteen

Best album cover ever

Bruce and Jimmy in Bruce’s classic 70s style

Bruce Springsteen’s recent appearance on Jimmy Fallon (watch it here) got us thinking about his classic style.  He was featured singing a parody of “Born To Run,” released in 1975, and got dressed up in his old-school duds for the occasion (as did Jimmy Fallon):  denim vest to show off his ridiculously toned arms, tight jeans, red bandana, aviators.

The Boss’ best style moments

While we can’t endorse that full mix for 2014, there are so many elements of The Boss’ style that are still inspiring us!  He wore denim like no other, cuffed the sleeves of his button-downs like a pro, and loved a good leather jacket.  He favored simple mixes with a fun twist, like a plain tee with jeans and a bandana or wide-leg pants with a screened tee and a beanie.  All of these outfit ideas feel right at home in 2014.

white-button-down-jeans

Even almost 40 years after “Born To Run” came out (wow), Bruce’s style is super relevant.  Jeans and tee never gets old!  To get his look at stylehaus we mixed vintage Levi’s cutoffs with a studded Prada belt ($588) and added a classic white tank ($64).   Stylist Jessica’s American Flag jeans are a nod to the “Born in the USA” singer; adding a blue leather jacket was a no-brainer Bruce move.  The quickest way to get the Springsteen style is to grab your tightest jeans, tuck in a crisp white button down, and roll the sleeves just so.

Once you’re dressed a la Bruce, watch this live version of “Born To Run” and try not to fall in love.

Marina Monday: Leather Lovers

In this edition of Marina Monday, stylehaus founder Marina Monroe shows off a piece from her extensive leather jacket collection with BFF and sytlehaus client Olga Valentina:

 Marina Monroe Veda Jacket

Marina Monroe Veda Jacket 2_result

If there’s one thing that every woman should have in her closet, it’s a leather jacket.  And when I say “a leather jacket”, I mean at least 10.  That’s normal, right?

I’m not ashamed to admit that I probably have upwards of 25 leather jackets in my wardrobe- I wear one almost every day, and when you wear something that frequently you need options!  My new favorite leather jacket is from Veda (always Veda), and I can’t get enough of its beaded sleeves.  Neither can Olga!  Even though we wore our beaded leathers in pretty much the same exact way, I think the possibilities are endless for this piece.  Over an evening gown, with boyfriend jeans, on top of a shift dress…

Marina Monroe Veda Jacket 5_result

Marina-Monroe-Veda1_result

To me, the over-the-top embellished sleeves are a throwback to 80s glamour.  To counteract that 80s feel, Olga and I made sure the rest of the pieces we wore were ultra-modern.

Marina-Monroe-veda2_result

Cartoon muscle tees from cool-girl brand Laundry Room added a hip, grungy feel to these sparkly toppers.  I went for a melting Bart tee while Olga chose a dripping Minnie Mouse version.  So cute!  I added waxed drop-crotch pants, Olga rocked a leather-on-leather combo, and that’s where our differences end!

Both of us opted for Giuseppe Zanotti strappy buckle-up booties (mine in nude leather, Olga’s in red suede) and Olympia Le Tan book clutches.

Since the jacket sleeves are so bling-y, we used extra accessories sparingly.  We added a few rings and our matching outfits were complete!

These Boots Are Made for…Summertime!

Can we all take a moment to stop and appreciate the cutout boot?  Honestly, this has to be fashion brilliance at its smartest in the shoe department, and it practically has its own season after winter and throughout summer. With the breezy feel of sandals and the structure of a boot, it’s the perfect transitional shoe for the transitioning seasons. We’ve found ourselves addicted to almost every attempted style from stilettos, to brogues and even combat boots. We’ve seen them dressed up in skirts of various lengths or going casual-chic paired with skinny pants. This sandal/boot fusion is the slickest way to pull off heavier footwear in these hot summer months ahead, so check out some of our favorite styles and tell us how you wear yours best!

Saint Laurent RTW Spring 2013

The biggest, independent film festival known as Sundance is rapidly approaching, and we want those of you lucky enough to be going to be prepared for the most fashionable, film-filled two weeks! Even if you are not attending the Utah-based festival from January 17th through the 27th, we want you to stay bundled up in style! Pile on the layers, such as scarves which are versatile and are a must-have for day-to-night fashion. Oversized floppy hats are a big trend for spring, so pack a wool hat to stay warm in the chilly weather. Suede and leather booties are also a great go-to shoe for the snow. They are easy to pair with skinny jeans, a skirt, dress, or even shorts with tights for a bit of an edge. We are looking forward to seeing all of these bundled up fashionistas take on the cold weather in style!
