Top 10 Miuccia Prada Quotes

prada2

Fashion designer, entrepreneur, curator, intellectual, feminist, and icon: Miuccia Prada is a woman of many talents. Miuccia took over her grandfather, Mario Prada’s, family owned luxury goods company in 1978 with little more than vision and drive. Over the three decades that followed, Miuccia transformed Prada into a fashion powerhouse, leading the label to record-breaking commercial and critical success and eventually making Prada the globally admired fashion institution it is today.  An outspoken liberal thinker and feminist, Miuccia Prada does not court the spotlight, but she also doesn’t shrink from it. When Miuccia speaks, she speaks with insight, gravitas, and a wonderfully endearing lack of pretension.

Here are my 10 favorite Miuccia Prada quotes.

Rogue Rubber

rub1

Kenzo

Rubberized heels are all the rage.

Blame the inexplicable resurgence of blocky Birkenstocks and chunky Designer sandals that seem a dead ringer for your Mom’s Tevas: what was once categorized as the ultimate footwear faux pas is now the epitome of cool. Hipster alt-fashion has made a significant impact on high fashion, and the rad rubber worn by models at some of Fall 2014’s most fabulous shows are just a natural progression. The rubberized heels everyone you want to look like will be wearing next Season are a strangely appealing hybrid between the ‘ugly sandal’ trend and ‘cool kicks’ so popular amongst street style bloggers and the rappers they listen to.

Like the sneaker wedge pioneered by Isabel Marant pioneered and subsequently copied by virtually everyone, rubberized shoes are a sportier way to wear heels while still saying “I’m not trying as hard as you”. Thick, sneaker-like soles with a matt, neoprene shellac stomped down the Runways at Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Kenzo, DKNY, and Coach. Styles at Prada and Tommy Hilfiger paired accentuated rubber bases with chunky straps and dramatic details such as colorblocking and jewels.

Move over, sneaker wedge; there’s a new shoe sheriff in town.

And it’s made of rubber.

Here’s five fantastic shoes guaranteed inspire your need to rock that rubba.

Is any sensation more deliciously simple than a cool summer breeze whipping against your long(enough), tan(ish), legs? Rocking the free leg walk is Summertime’s sweetest pleasure and the one thought that keeps us going during those frigid winter evenings spent slathered in bulky layers.

June marks the official start of Summer, so this week we paired small bottoms with long tops for a sophisticated and insanely wearable array of lovely looks.

THE LOOK FOR LESS: CELINE, 3.1 PHILLIP LIM, AND PRADA

While walking through Zara, we were stopped in our tracks by some oddly familiar designs.  Tops, skirts, and dresses reminiscent of the Spring runways were absolutely everywhere- not that we’re complaining.  We’ll never say no to a, ahem, derivative work of a runway piece at an affordable price!  No knock-offs here, though: while Zara’s designs are thisclose to looking like the real thing, they stop short of being blatant rip-offs.

We have a feeling we’ll get tons of, “Is that Celine?” questions.  If asked, we’ll just smile and say, “It’s Zara! Under $100!” with a smile.  Bragging about a great deal is the new black, you know.

If you’re into Celine’s abstract art vibes, look no further than the racks of Zara.  This primary-color painted tee is your best bet; wear it with a black-and-white skirt that recalls Celine’s Spring 2014 opening look for an inspired outfit!

zara-phillip-lim-knock-off

More of a 3.1 Phillip Lim girl?  Zara’s got you covered.  The designers ode to geodes is available for under $60!  Lim paired his version with a yellow leather skirt, but we’re thinking of distressed denim instead.

Prada’s crazy Spring runway show is hard to emulate- Miucca Prada’s pieces were so over-the-top that it’d be risky to recreate.  Zara found a way, though, with some of the simpler dresses that walked the catwalk.  Prada’s sporty shift dresses are some of the most inspiring pieces of the season, and Zara’s offering a pared-down version for about $70.  Add a giant statement necklace to replace Prada’s runway bling, and you’re good to go!

Trend Report: Bra-Over-Shirt

The inner-wear as outer-wear trend has gone through a lot of phases in the past few seasons.  Starting out with sheer tops that showed off pretty bras underneath, the exhibitionist trend progressed to cropped bralette tops worn with high-waisted skirts.  After seasons and seasons of see-through and skin, designers are finally pushing back with a new bra-inspired trend: the bra-over-the-shirt look.  It sounds a little crazy, and it is a little crazy- but that’s fashion, right?

Maison Martin Margiela for H&M

Maison Martin Margiela for H&M

The latest bra trend evolved out of a running joke- avant garde designers and fashion bloggers with a sense of humor wanted to pay tribute to the bra-top trend in a cheeky way.  Starting with Maison Martin Margiela’s line for H&M last year, the trend has evolved into a full-on runway hit!

Prada SS14

Prada SS14

We’re crediting the Man Repeller, Leandra Medine, with getting the ball rolling on this one.  This sassy blog post invited girls to wear their bras over a tee shirt as a new way to rock the “bra” boat.  For Spring 2014, Miuccia caught on and showcased giant, glittering bra shapes over almost every look in her show- genius!  We’re kinda obsessed with her bra coat.

Jean Paul Gaultier PF14

Jean Paul Gaultier PF14

Now, the Pre Fall 2014 look books are starting to come out and it’s clear that the look is here to stay.  Jean Paul Gaultier took some of the humor out of Prada’s SS14 look and offered sleek leather and silk bralettes styled over luxurious separates for the new season.

We’re a little skeptical- we LOVE the look of this trend on the runway, but we don’t know if we could pull it off IRL.  What about you?

As intended, Fashion Week informs the industry as to what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season, and on that note, a “highly maintained lip” look is right on trend! Throughout several shows, one exciting trend has continued to make its way back to the runway, and that is the bold, statement pout. Whether it is fluorescent pink, oxblood red or charcoal black, designers all over Fashion Week are completing their collections with a bold lip color. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni achieved Missoni’s stunning matte-lip by mixing pink and orange lip color, topping it off with a hint of red and finishing with a brush of pigment. Pat McGrath has been named, “the most influential make-up artist in the world” by Vogue Magazine (among others), so it is no secret she came to Fashion Week ready to apply the most effective beauty secrets in the biz. Just take a closer look at the bold red lips she graced Prada with this season, and demonstrated that contour isn’t just for the face. While Brood went with a more ‘feathered’ pigment lip-look and Moschino went straight to black (MAC’s Kohl Power Eye Pencil with MAC lip gloss on top, to be exact), and we are ready to hop on the bold lip color bandwagon this season!

Miranda Kerr

Loafers have consistently been a trend for every season, but this spring we’re lusting after the sophisticated smoking slipper by some of our favorite designers. With an innovative twist on the traditional slipper-styled loafer, designers such as Christian Louboutin, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen, and Charlotte Olympia have added studs, detailed embroidery, sparkles, and a creative new level of style to their takes on the trend. From capped-toe metallics, to tassels and faces of cats, designers have put a unique, fashion-forward spin on these comfortable yet practical shoes for spring and summer. Perfect for a more casual office setting, a day of shopping, or paired with a blazer, blouse, and leather shorts for nighttime, these loafers are perfect for a variety of occasions and are a great statement piece to add some personality and flair to your personal style. Slip these loafers on with a pair of jeans or colored pants, or combine with a skirt and sweater for a casual yet trendy spring-inspired look. When in doubt, mimic Miranda Kerr’s outfit: her loafers paired with jeans, a black blouse, statement sunglasses, and an oversized bag make for an instantaneous laid-back-chic look. The smoking slipper is a must have for men as well and looks great combined with more casual attire such as jeans, a t-shirt, and cardigan, or with a suit for classic and contemporary look.
