5 Trends from NYC Fashion Week: Fall 2015

NYC Fashion Week just kicked off, but it’s never too early to start trend forecasting!

I scanned looks from the hottest designers to debut (thus far) and found five amazing pieces everyone will be wearing come Fall 2015.

Don’t wait for the herd to catch on; jump on these trends now!

1. Tome: Vinyl

tome1

Plastic is about to be everything. Models sporting shiny, vinyl miniskirts dazzled onlookers at Tome’s Fall 2015 Fashion Show. Once reserved for cheap flooring and records (RIP), vinyl looks sleek and futuristic paired with leather or lightweight knitwear.

2. Alexander Wang: Silver Buttons

wang1

Delicate, glittering silver accents made a striking contrast to Alexander Wang’s black-on-black Fall 2015 Collection. Silver is already making a massive comeback in jewelry, but the rows of silver buttons Wang added to tough biker chic jackets made is clear that silver is the new it embellishment.

3. Rag & Bone: Lacy Camisoles

rag1

In the early 2000s, I had an entire drawer of lacy camisole tops that I paired with everything and anything. Rag & Bone brought that middle school staple back to life at Fall 2015 fashion week. Worn over lengthy, gauzy t-shirts and paired with pencil skirts, the silky lace camisoles felt simultaneously fresh and classic. If you’re not ready for the cami version, Rag & Bone also showed a delightful slip dress with similar lace accents.

4. Rodarte: Asymmetrical Leather Minis

rodarte

Leather + Asymmetry = Razor Sharp Edge. The dynamic duo at Rodarte dazzled the fashion world yet again at New York Fashion Week: 2015. Inspired by avian migration, or  “leaving the city to a more pastoral place,” as Laura Mulleavy put it, the collection conveyed whimsy and strength. Party girls and fashionistas across the globe will delight in the feisty sex appeal of an asymmetrical leather miniskirt.

5. Thom Browne: Netted Veils

thomThom Browne’s mafia-inspired Fall 2015 Collection was a magnificently melancholy triumph for the young designer. Each outfit demonstrated the power of mixing textures while remaining true to the show’s story arc. I was smitten with the ebony netted veils that subtly shielded the models faces. Bold? Yes. But trend setting means taking risks, and veils add nostalgic romance to any outfit.

Lounge In Luxury

Last month’s Spring 2015 fashion week is likely to set the styles we’ll be sporting by mid-Winter. I’m happy to announce that for once, labels are designing high-end garments with comfort in mind.

Runways were packed with long, lean looks that read like the marriage of loungewear and black tie. Stand out looks included Rag & Bone’s loose leather tunic and trousers and Calvin Klein’s spacious matching tank top/long skirt sets.

Calvin Klein Spring/Summer 2015

Marc Jacobs sent out models in massive floor length skirts topped by a navy zip up hoodie that made an interesting mix of accessible streetwear and creative couture creation.

DKNY Spring/Summer 2015

DKNY and The Row sent out models in all white, two piece ensembles that looked casually modern and faintly futuristic.

If you’re not on the runway, I’d suggest pairing loose bottoms with a matching (or simply complementary) fitted top. All white is my favorite color scheme for this look, but if you’re not down with wearing so much of such a stark hue, go for your favorite neutral.

If you do dare, head to toe white was one of Spring 2015 Fashion Week’s biggest hues and you’re likely to start spotting a crazy amount of starlets and street style bloggers rocking all white everything.

Some buy Vogue for the pretty pictures: Our Favorite Campaigns of Fall 2014

A great edition of Time has to have minimal advertising– I mean who wants to have to flip through endless advertisements for Activia? On the contrary, a  great edition of Vogue (or Elle or Harper’s or whatever) contains the best, most ravishing advertisements one can find- the season’s latest fashion campaigns. These campaigns can be so chic, so sexy, so sophisticated that sometimes, we can’t help but skip through the articles and “only look at the pretty pictures.” Middle school style.

Here are our favorite campaigns (reading distractions) of the season.

Moschino

Jeremy Scott takes aver Moschino with a bang– or more appropriately, a burp. The young designer debuts as the new Moschino Creative Director with a McDonald’s inspired collection. The runway collection has been described by some critics as “trashy” and “over the top.” Other critics, on the other hand, enjoyed the playful collection by the young designer and described the collection as “delicious.”

Because of how the collection was shown on the runway and the critics’ sometimes harsh reviews, we expected Moschino to put out an ad campaign just as “over the top” and “delicious” but instead, what we got was an elegant ad campaign with some of New York’s most sophisticated.

Celebrated photographer Steven Meisel captured models Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmerman, Saskia De Brauw and Caroline Murphy in what seems to be a formal, high brow get together. But if you look closely, you can see the cheese  on Saskia’s dress and the other playful, clever details inspired by the world’s most well-known fast food chain.

And what’s more Elegant than Queen Linda? The “M” on the quilted shoulder bag does not stand for “McDonalds” when the Chameleon Queen carries it.

It can stand for money, madame, magnificent or maybe even Moschino.

Calvin Klein

There’s not much to say about the Fall 2014 Clavin Klein ad campaign promotion the hashtag #mycalvins. There’s little to say but lots to feel. Little words, lots of lust. Little speaking, lots of moans. hbz-best-ads-ck-01-lg

Photographer Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott reminds us why we pinned photos like these on out bedroom walls in the 90’s. (Kate Moss and Marky Mark, anyone?). Model Lara Stone is modernized in this ad mostly by the (strategically placed) hashtag.

hbz-best-ads-ck-03-lgLara is joined by Anerican model Matt Terry.

Of course the Calvin Klein girl has a boyfriend. Or maybe they’re just friends. With lots of benefits we all wanna partake in.

Mulberry

Party supergirl Cara Delevigne, turns her head away from the London party scene for just a little to enjoy all that the beautiful English countryside has to offer.

Box On Top: Wearing The Boxy T Trend For Summer & Fall 2014

Boxy Tees are a flexible and surprisingly sophisticated top to try.

Just last week, we discussed the 60’s mod trend taking high to low fashion by storm. But the mod mania isn’t limited to micro-minis and bold, eye-catching, retro inspired prints; shape and structure is also vital when incorporation mod into the modern wardrobe. Next Season’s silhouettes are saturated with irreverently geometric shapes from head to toe. One less discussed but ultra chic variation of 60’s structure is the humble yet universally flattering boxed top 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Peter Som, Tibi, and Calvin Klein sent models down the Spring/Summer 2014 Runways in square shaped tops. boxtop1 On the retail side, the affordable angels at Zara and Topshop are selling especially fantastic fast fashion renditions of the box top trend. Square, slouchy, and slightly off the shoulder tee shirts impeccably combine form with function. When searching for a box top of your own, veer towards a saturated solid or minimalist color blocking to compliment the unfussy square shape. The hem should be slightly cropped, not so much as to reveal belly button, but not so long that it reaches the top of your pants or skirt.

The best part of a square top is it allows you to play with proportions. Pair with polished trousers or a fully, swingy maxi skirt to elegantly contrast slouch with structure. Or, for a flirtier ensemble that shows off your waist, tuck the boxed top into a high waisted skirt or skinny jeans. Although a boxy top flourishes in the office because of it’s structured polish, it’s outrageous flexibility offers a myriad of casual options.

A perfect laid back weekend day to night ensemble might pair a pale, pastel cropped boxy top with those perfectly weathered boyfriend jeans in a light wash. Roll up the cuffs, add a low heeled leather bootie or printed flat, and throw on a panama hat and you’ve got your go to gear for Brunch, Farmer’s Markets, and sunny strolls down shop lined streets.

Here are 3 commandments for rocking a box top

1. If you’re pairing a box top with slouchier, looser bottoms, make sure the top is cropped or at least on the shorter side.

A too long box top will drown your figure if paired with similarly wide garments!

2. When the temperature drops, try laying a crisp button up over your boxy top for that Serena Van Der Woodsen at Constance chic.

Pair with a mini skirt or shorts with tights to keep it sexy and contrasting.

3. A perfectly polished work ensemble is a boxy top paired with a pencil skirt and delicate accessories.

Marina Recap: World Cup & Wedding Whirl

recap

Hopped off the plane from LAX with a dream and a leather jacket… and snatched a couple winks of sleep before waking up at the crack of dawn (9AM) before zooming straight to Stylehaüs! My business is my baby (sorry Ben) so no matter how much fun I’m having on a trip, returning home is a welcome relief. With all the exciting changes and projects looming in the upcoming months, there’s little time to loaf around. And I’m ok with that. Here are some highlights of last week’s whirlwind of friends and family!

Work Hard Play Hard Need Nap

photo (1)

After landing in NYC late the night before, I worked a full but super productive day at stylehaüs, then made it to xiv for my good friend Dean May’s birthday.

photo

It was a classic Summer white party and I had an amazing time grooving in the DJ booth with Paul Oakenfold, a great artist and one of Ben’s good friends.

photo (2)

The spot was packed with gorgeous Hollywood types and everyone got super into sets from Oakenfold and the EC Twins.

marina8

I wore: a Cosabella bra, David Lerner white cotton tank top, white Superfine jeans, and Nike wedges.

I’ve got the blues… The leather jacket blues.

marina7

All #summer really means for us at @stylehausla is lighter colored leather

I wore: Topshop jeans, Rag & Bone booties, and two jackets from stylehaus. The blue and white floral print on the left is VEDA, and blue knitted leather jacket on the right is by Price Upon Request.

Blue Hat At Bar Marmont

marina6

Ben and I grabbed dinner and drinks at the ever-glam Bar Marmont for some much needed mushy couple time.

Hot Dog Before Julio

marna5

Ben and I watched the World Cup in style at our friend’s new place in the Hills. As much as I love tequila, I was loving those hot dogs more.

I wore: Benjamin J beige tank top, Topshop black jeans, and trusty Converse.

USA USA USA YAY

marina4

Not to be superstitious, but I swear my photos are lucky. The shot was taken literally seconds before USA scored a crucial goal. How cute are Ben and his friend in their matching pink button ups? I was calling them the Pink Gents all day.

View From The Top

marina3

When I say a house is amazing, that house is freakin phenomenal. Here I am accompanied by Sarah making the most of a beautiful view before Sunset. Her white crochet dress is to die for.

PhotoBooth For Life

marina2

Photobooths are like amazing toys for adults. Like grown up legos. If we’re hanging out and I see a photobooth available, you know we’ll be taking some weird and wonderful pictures.

Stanford Stadium

6.30

After a wonderful week, Ben and I took a quick trip to Stanford for his sister’s wedding. In a stroke of brilliance that my bridezilla self may or may not slightly envy, his sister held her rehearsal dinner at Stanford Stadium, where she met her husband. I can’t even compete. But I’ll try.

I wore: Balenciaga suspender harem pants, Christian Dior Jazz shoes, Pierre Hardy purse, and vintage striped top.

The Family Stone/Kusin

rehersal

My future in-laws are a damn good-looking crowd. How dapper is Ben? The only one not thrilled is that baby, who looks ready for a nap .
