Rogue Rubber

Rubberized heels are all the rage.

Blame the inexplicable resurgence of blocky Birkenstocks and chunky Designer sandals that seem a dead ringer for your Mom’s Tevas: what was once categorized as the ultimate footwear faux pas is now the epitome of cool. Hipster alt-fashion has made a significant impact on high fashion, and the rad rubber worn by models at some of Fall 2014’s most fabulous shows are just a natural progression. The rubberized heels everyone you want to look like will be wearing next Season are a strangely appealing hybrid between the ‘ugly sandal’ trend and ‘cool kicks’ so popular amongst street style bloggers and the rappers they listen to.

Like the sneaker wedge pioneered by Isabel Marant pioneered and subsequently copied by virtually everyone, rubberized shoes are a sportier way to wear heels while still saying “I’m not trying as hard as you”. Thick, sneaker-like soles with a matt, neoprene shellac stomped down the Runways at Prada, Tommy Hilfiger, Kenzo, DKNY, and Coach. Styles at Prada and Tommy Hilfiger paired accentuated rubber bases with chunky straps and dramatic details such as colorblocking and jewels.

Move over, sneaker wedge; there’s a new shoe sheriff in town.

And it’s made of rubber.

Here’s five fantastic shoes guaranteed inspire your need to rock that rubba.

Sweatshirts: An On and Off Duty Trend

The sweatshirt…an all American staple that has become a worldwide fashion statement in the most comfortable way possible. With a collared button down, under a leather jacket, or strictly on its own, we can all agree that a crew neck sweatshirt is a piece we all need in our wardrobe for those days of not knowing what to wear. The look says “I want to be comfortable yet put together and fashion forward”.

IMG_8202

From Balenciaga and Givenchy to Alexander Wang and 3.1 Phillip Lim, the runway was swarming with sweatshirts that everyone had to have. The Givenchy Bambi sweatshirt is a celebrity fashion yes and it’s versatility has been endless, paired with a long sheer dress on the red carpet even. If Bambi can do it, then so can this Clover Canyon “Smokin’ Granny” sweatshirt-like sweater.

With the in-between weather of spring, mixing winter and summer pieces creates new looks like this Avelon Hatchet Mesh Tank under the “Smokin’ Granny”. This outfit is great for running errands and lunch with friends but switches to night by removing the sweater and adding heels. Having a few go-to sweatshirts makes layering easy and effortlessly chic.

Trend Report: Psychedelic Spring

In one of my favorite scenes of The Devil Wear Prada, Miranda aka Meryl shreds tired suggestions for the spring issue in one deliciously scathing swoop:

spring1.png

As usual, Miranda’s insightful cruelty is on point. Flowers for spring time have been done up and down every which way since the beginning of fashion time. Yet, it’s undeniable that after months of deep winter hues, we’re ready to break out of the black cocoon and pop some brights in our look. So what’s a cool girl in the spring of 2014 to do? My solution: beachy psychedelics, chrome glow, and nouveau tribals to bring the bright without losing your edge.

Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection includes sophisticated psychedelic prints in shades of burgundy and sumatra that will blend flawlessly with your dark winter leathers for an immaculate transition from winter to spring.

LazyOaf, an irreverent UK-based label popular amongst the hipster hordes, combined psychedelic prints with Shinjuku mania for their Spring 2014 Lookbook. You don’t have to be a 90’s kid to flip over the collection’s eye-catching patterns and crafted construction.

UNIF’s Spring Collection blurs dreamy psychedelic, candy coated color, and DGAF attitude for an assortment that is just so, so good. So. damn. good. Let’s break my 3 favorite LSD trip looks piece by piece. Tie dye is far from my cup of tea, but the flattering yet outré dress design is perfect for walking along a Malibu beach, wind whipping in my hair, jasmine incense wafting through the sea breeze… Hey, it could happen! Look #2 is simple psychedelic with that chrome finish that’s all the rage amongst cool girls from Silverlake to Bed-Stuy. Finally, UNIF’s fringed kimono references Liza Minnelli and Lisa Frank for a new apex of loungewear ideal for informal outdoor brunches or glamorous lazy days.

Mara Hoffman’s Spring 2014 is like a sprinkle of peyote to the eyeball. Her psychedelic patterns manage to be both crisp and complex, with heavily saturated colors accenting geometric patterns and lean, languid swirls. It’s a fashion world cliché to refer to clothes as art, but Mara Hoffman’s impeccably cut pieces are pops of post modern mecca to swath over our mere human form.

These Boots Are Made for…Summertime!

Picture 1

Picture 8

Can we all take a moment to stop and appreciate the cutout boot?  Honestly, this has to be fashion brilliance at its smartest in the shoe department, and it practically has its own season after winter and throughout summer. With the breezy feel of sandals and the structure of a boot, it’s the perfect transitional shoe for the transitioning seasons. We’ve found ourselves addicted to almost every attempted style from stilettos, to brogues and even combat boots. We’ve seen them dressed up in skirts of various lengths or going casual-chic paired with skinny pants. This sandal/boot fusion is the slickest way to pull off heavier footwear in these hot summer months ahead, so check out some of our favorite styles and tell us how you wear yours best!

Summer Sunnies

sun1

If you wear glasses then we’re considering you one lucky lady. ‘Why’ you might ask?  Think about it, my fashionista… you actually get the privilege of switching up the style and accessories that adorn those dreamy eyes everyday! You’ve probably already done the tedious experimenting on what’s ‘wild’ VS ‘tame’, what’s ‘professional’ VS ‘funky’, and your various favorites are ready to go no matter what your style is for the day.  If your frames only come out in the sunshine and you’re a little unfamiliar with which stylish direction to go venturing out into, allow us to introduce to you some of our favorite sunnies for the season!

We’ve already touched on the newly trending colored lenses for spring, which is a unique diversion from the classic black-out and semi-reflective lenses in previous years.  After investigating our favorite Coachella street-style looks from this years’ show, we fell in love with the big, round, retro-inspired sunnies that kept a steady appearance amongst bohemian beauties and wild-child cliques. We dig the classic Ray Bans for their notoriously smart edge, but if you’re trying to go the extra style-mile, try an equally classic pair with the upper corners peaked a bit. Those edgy cat-inspired frames will add a dash of sexy, femme-fatal to your summertime vibe!

Out With The Old and In With The Chic!

Hand Jewelry
Jewelry4

We have a hard time believing its been so long since the statement piece of an outfit adorned a woman’s hand in the springtime, but the last truly edgy piece that comes to mind that graced us from wrist to fingertips, are the gloves ‘everyday women’ would wear with their Sundays finest. Sure, trends like chunky cuffs, layering rings, bracelets, and fingerless gloves have had their 15 minutes of fashion-fame, but what happened to the chic pair of lacey mitts the women of earlier times detailed themselves with? Did we completely forget about a wardrobe piece so elegant and posh over time? Perhaps we did, because lace gloves out for a stroll in afternoon today may look like they need a pair of matching feather kitten-heels to go with them.

That is why we’re delighted to see a more exotic trend finally beginning to take over our pretty, delicate hands again; …hand jewelry!

We’d spot versions of the unfamiliar jewelry piece few and far between in the past, but it seems to be declaring its presence for 2013! This knockout accessory is the chicest ‘2-birds-1-stone’ wardrobe-staple to hit our jewelry box yet. Put a sexy accent on your overall look, and wear this trend to make your look express the ‘went-the-extra-style-mile’ while not saying ‘out-dated’. Sometimes more really is more. Ditch a ring or 2 for the day and put this striking ornament on display where your finest jewelry presents itself.

With many different names transitioning through the Ungaro fashion house, all eyes were on the fall 2013 runway at Paris Fashion Week. Today it was the Italian up-and-comer Fausto Puglisi’s turn to try his hand at the house’s legacy, and his previous collections covered in geometric prints and embroideries made him a reasonably logical choice for this show. “I wanted it to be very Ungaro, but with a graphic approach,” Puglisi said backstage. “It’s not romantic, it’s more graphic.” Puglisi incorporated Ungaro signatures into his looks with flowers and patterns, and incorporated plenty of polka dots, leopard prints, and a bright palette of yellow, light blue, and royal blue mixed with black and ivory. The one-shoulder dresses mixed with bright, contrasting colors offered a unique spin to the fall runways, and featured a mod, retro-inspired feel to the designs. We thought the use of geometric patterns was unique and playful, and the collection definitely had a creative mix of high fashion, fun, and couture. The light blue and leopard combination was one of our favorites!

As intended, Fashion Week informs the industry as to what’s “in” and what’s “out” for the season, and on that note, a “highly maintained lip” look is right on trend! Throughout several shows, one exciting trend has continued to make its way back to the runway, and that is the bold, statement pout. Whether it is fluorescent pink, oxblood red or charcoal black, designers all over Fashion Week are completing their collections with a bold lip color. Makeup artist Lucia Pieroni achieved Missoni’s stunning matte-lip by mixing pink and orange lip color, topping it off with a hint of red and finishing with a brush of pigment. Pat McGrath has been named, “the most influential make-up artist in the world” by Vogue Magazine (among others), so it is no secret she came to Fashion Week ready to apply the most effective beauty secrets in the biz. Just take a closer look at the bold red lips she graced Prada with this season, and demonstrated that contour isn’t just for the face. While Brood went with a more ‘feathered’ pigment lip-look and Moschino went straight to black (MAC’s Kohl Power Eye Pencil with MAC lip gloss on top, to be exact), and we are ready to hop on the bold lip color bandwagon this season!

Miranda Kerr

Loafers have consistently been a trend for every season, but this spring we’re lusting after the sophisticated smoking slipper by some of our favorite designers. With an innovative twist on the traditional slipper-styled loafer, designers such as Christian Louboutin, Miu Miu, Alexander McQueen, and Charlotte Olympia have added studs, detailed embroidery, sparkles, and a creative new level of style to their takes on the trend. From capped-toe metallics, to tassels and faces of cats, designers have put a unique, fashion-forward spin on these comfortable yet practical shoes for spring and summer. Perfect for a more casual office setting, a day of shopping, or paired with a blazer, blouse, and leather shorts for nighttime, these loafers are perfect for a variety of occasions and are a great statement piece to add some personality and flair to your personal style. Slip these loafers on with a pair of jeans or colored pants, or combine with a skirt and sweater for a casual yet trendy spring-inspired look. When in doubt, mimic Miranda Kerr’s outfit: her loafers paired with jeans, a black blouse, statement sunglasses, and an oversized bag make for an instantaneous laid-back-chic look. The smoking slipper is a must have for men as well and looks great combined with more casual attire such as jeans, a t-shirt, and cardigan, or with a suit for classic and contemporary look.
