Just last week, we discussed the 60’s mod trend taking high to low fashion by storm. But the mod mania isn’t limited to micro-minis and bold, eye-catching, retro inspired prints; shape and structure is also vital when incorporation mod into the modern wardrobe. Next Season’s silhouettes are saturated with irreverently geometric shapes from head to toe. One less discussed but ultra chic variation of 60’s structure is the humble yet universally flattering boxed top 3.1 Phillip Lim, Marc Jacobs, Peter Som, Tibi, and Calvin Klein sent models down the Spring/Summer 2014 Runways in square shaped tops. boxtop1 On the retail side, the affordable angels at Zara and Topshop are selling especially fantastic fast fashion renditions of the box top trend. Square, slouchy, and slightly off the shoulder tee shirts impeccably combine form with function. When searching for a box top of your own, veer towards a saturated solid or minimalist color blocking to compliment the unfussy square shape. The hem should be slightly cropped, not so much as to reveal belly button, but not so long that it reaches the top of your pants or skirt.

The best part of a square top is it allows you to play with proportions. Pair with polished trousers or a fully, swingy maxi skirt to elegantly contrast slouch with structure. Or, for a flirtier ensemble that shows off your waist, tuck the boxed top into a high waisted skirt or skinny jeans. Although a boxy top flourishes in the office because of it’s structured polish, it’s outrageous flexibility offers a myriad of casual options.

A perfect laid back weekend day to night ensemble might pair a pale, pastel cropped boxy top with those perfectly weathered boyfriend jeans in a light wash. Roll up the cuffs, add a low heeled leather bootie or printed flat, and throw on a panama hat and you’ve got your go to gear for Brunch, Farmer’s Markets, and sunny strolls down shop lined streets.

Here are 3 commandments for rocking a box top

1. If you’re pairing a box top with slouchier, looser bottoms, make sure the top is cropped or at least on the shorter side.

A too long box top will drown your figure if paired with similarly wide garments!

2. When the temperature drops, try laying a crisp button up over your boxy top for that Serena Van Der Woodsen at Constance chic.

Pair with a mini skirt or shorts with tights to keep it sexy and contrasting.

3. A perfectly polished work ensemble is a boxy top paired with a pencil skirt and delicate accessories.

THE LOOK FOR LESS: CELINE, 3.1 PHILLIP LIM, AND PRADA

While walking through Zara, we were stopped in our tracks by some oddly familiar designs.  Tops, skirts, and dresses reminiscent of the Spring runways were absolutely everywhere- not that we’re complaining.  We’ll never say no to a, ahem, derivative work of a runway piece at an affordable price!  No knock-offs here, though: while Zara’s designs are thisclose to looking like the real thing, they stop short of being blatant rip-offs.

We have a feeling we’ll get tons of, “Is that Celine?” questions.  If asked, we’ll just smile and say, “It’s Zara! Under $100!” with a smile.  Bragging about a great deal is the new black, you know.

If you’re into Celine’s abstract art vibes, look no further than the racks of Zara.  This primary-color painted tee is your best bet; wear it with a black-and-white skirt that recalls Celine’s Spring 2014 opening look for an inspired outfit!

More of a 3.1 Phillip Lim girl?  Zara’s got you covered.  The designers ode to geodes is available for under $60!  Lim paired his version with a yellow leather skirt, but we’re thinking of distressed denim instead.

Prada’s crazy Spring runway show is hard to emulate- Miucca Prada’s pieces were so over-the-top that it’d be risky to recreate.  Zara found a way, though, with some of the simpler dresses that walked the catwalk.  Prada’s sporty shift dresses are some of the most inspiring pieces of the season, and Zara’s offering a pared-down version for about $70.  Add a giant statement necklace to replace Prada’s runway bling, and you’re good to go!

Click HERE to watch the entire fashion segment!

Maria Menounos is rocking one of our favorite trends, leather! We styled this look with a robin’s egg blue chambray top from J. Crew, multi-colored statement necklace from J. Crew and peep toe Dana Davis heels (available at stylehaüs) for the ultimate edgy/classic look. One great aspect of wearing leather is that you want easily take it from day to night! Just switch out the button down for a camisole, throw on some tights, and you’re ready to go!

This colorful leather look that Renee Bargh is sporting is so unexpected and playful! The bright colored Kimberly Taylor blouse from stylehaüs paired with the patterned leather skirt from Topshop and bold purple Giuseppe Zanotti booties create the ultimate weekend outfit!

They loved their leather looks so much they didn’t want to change! Looking great ladies!

Maria is wearing our second trend, the menswear look. Mixing classic menswear pieces such as a structured Smythe blazer, MAXFOWLES button down top and pants from Forever21 with more feminine items like vintage inspired Dana Davis heels and a vintage diamante tie necklace make for a very work appropriate outfit.

The peplum trend has been one of the most popular trends that we’ve seen in a long time! Marina loves this trend so much she decided to wear peplum as well! Renee’s peplum top from Zara looks great paired with these quirky printed pants also  from Zara. Peplum is also very figure flattering. It’s fitted in all the right places and flares out to cover the midsection. Overall, this trend looks great on all body types and can be styled in many ways!
